Jackie Malley had a season high 24 points and the St. Lawrence women's basketball team held the first place Union Garnet Chargers to 0-16 from beyond the arc in their 59-47 road victory Friday night in Schenectady, N.Y.
The Saints move to 9-4 overall and 4-3 in the Liberty League, placing them in fifth place in the conference as they continue through conference matchups.
"It was an excellent defensive effort tonight," said head coach
Dan Roiger. "That was one of the best displays of mental toughness we've had in a while. They keep working on their game in practice and it's good to see it pay off for them."
In the first portion of the opening quarter, Union got out to a 8-2 lead but the Saints had a response. Six points from
Nicole Jeffrey and two free throws with a minute remaining allowed the Scarlet and Brown to take a 15-14 lead after the first quarter.
Both sides had strong defense early and in the opening minutes of the second, the Saints didn't score and the Garnet Chargers only had two points. However, St. Lawrence recorded a quick 7-0 run going to take a 22-16 lead with four minutes left in the half. The Garnet Chargers closed the gap to end the half and the Saints led 27-26 after the first 20 minutes. Malley led the Saints with 11 points including scoring the last five of the half for St. Lawrence.
In a one-point game, 33-32 in favor of the Saints late in the third quarter,
Elizabeth Flynn added two clutch assists. She found Malley and
Hannah Van Dyke open for three pointers, and with the two threes, the Saints had their largest lead of the game 39-32. The Saints then headed into the fourth quarter with a 41-37 lead.
Union began the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run, gaining the lead for the first time in the second half, up 44-41 with seven minutes left. The Scarlet and Brown immediately responded with a 7-2 spurt highlighted by Malley's fourth three of the game and an and-1 bucket by
Annie Perry. Union cut the lead to one possession with a free throw with 2:44 left, but then the Saints defense held the Garnet Chargers scoreless the rest of the game and went 7-8 from the stripe in the closing minutes, ending the game scoring the final nine points in the 12-point victory.
Mason Baker-Schlendering was in double figures with 10 points and also had six rebounds. Jeffrey had six points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench. Flynn led the team with 10 rebounds and also contributed with four assists while Caelen McHarney had five assists as well.
The Saints will be in action tomorrow, January 18 in Ithaca to take on the Bombers who are 5-1 in Liberty League play. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
