The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team, highlighted by the dominant play of the Karera sisters, had a very successful day to open the Union Invitational in Schenectady, N.Y. on Saturday.
In the A draw, both
Molly Jespersen and
Ariane Karera advanced out of the first round with wins. Jespersen defeated Oneonta's Haley Peck 8-2, while Karera defeated Union's Sammy Jacobs 8-6.
Jespersen fell in the semifinals and will play in the third-place match tomorrow. Karera on the other hand, advanced to the draw final with an 8-6 win over Luisa Arizpe Sierra of Union. The sophomore will look to take down her third Garnet Charger tomorrow for the bracket when she takes on Chara Meidani.
In the B draw, the Saints once again claimed a pair of opening-round wins.
Eleanor McDermed cruised to an 8-1 win over New Paltz's Isabel van der Veen, while
Yvette Karera defeated Union's Sydney Alphabet 8-3.
McDermed would drop an 8-4 match in the next round and will play for third, while Karera took a similar route to her sister defeating a second Garnet Charger in Claire Langille. Karera will play in the final of the B draw tomorrow against Union's Skylar Semon.
St. Lawrence saw two doubles teams reach the semifinals in the A draw with a pair of wins. Jespersen and McDermed teamed up to defeat Oneonta's Dani Copp and Haley Peck 8-1. Then on the other side of the bracket, the Karera sisters combined to beat Union's Alphabet and Jacobs to continue their dominance over the Garnet Chargers.
In the B doubles, the Saints will have one team in the semis after the combination of
Ellie Fritz and
Elisa Iuri defeated Union's Scarlet Carrara and Calista Finkelstein.
In the D bracket,
Sarah Oldland will represent the Scarlet and Brown in the semifinals after getting a first-round bye, and a dominant 8-0 win over Oneonta's Kyra Murray.
In the C draw, Iuri won her first collegiate match defeating New Paltz's Laina Martinez 8-3. A loss in the next round sets her up for a third-place match tomorrow.
The Saints will look to continue their strong play tomorrow on day two of the Union Invitational.
