Saints Score Early, Fall to Western New England on Laurentian Weekend

A strong first quarter put the Saints up 14-0, but four touchdowns powered Western New England to a 28-14 win over the St. Lawrence University football team under the lights on Friday night at Leckonby Stadium for Laurentian Weekend.

Daniel Lawther passed 20-for-29 for 153 yards and one touchdown, while Will Lederman ran for 65 yards on 12 attempts and a touchdown. Oskar Baldwin led the Saints' receiving game with six catches for 70 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively, Liam Perkins and Ryan Surhoff each recorded nine tackles, while Anthony Ferro finished with eight, including one for the loss of three yards. Brennan Twombly finished with seven tackles and his first career interception. Five Saints each recorded a pass breakup.

St. Lawrence started out strong, as Lederman ran for 39 yards, scoring his fourth touchdown of the season and the Saints first of the game for the lead. Clayton Fogler's kick was good for the extra point.

The Saints then took a 14-0 lead, as Lawther connected with Baldwin on a 16-yard pass. Fogler's second kick was good, and the Saints held onto their lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Golden Bears bounced back in the second quarter with two touchdowns to tie the game up. With 4:02 to play Brady Lafferty connected with Ryan Larson for 27 yards, and just as the clock expired Lafferty found De'Andre Harris with a 12-yard catch, tying the game.

Lafferty closed a 14-play drive with a five-yard pass to Callaghan Daskam in the third quarter to make it 21-14. Matt LaMontagne capped off the scoring for Western New England with a two-yard run. All of John Moss's kicks were good for the 28-14 final.



Lafferty went 17-for-26 and finished with 234 yards and three touchdowns, while LaMontagne ran for 73 yards on 16 attempts and Harris caught three passes for 65 yards.

Jason Shumilla finished with nine tackles, while Rogan Wotherspoon finished with a sack for the loss of 12 yards.

Western New England finished with a 21-11 first-down advantage and held a 382-225 advantage in total yards. The Golden Bears went 7-for-15 on third down conversions, while the Saints finished 6-of-14.

The Saints have next weekend off and will host Union to open Liberty League play on October 5.
