Clayton Fogler landed a 38-yard field goal to power the St. Lawrence University football team to a 27-24 overtime win over the Union Garnet Chargers on Saturday afternoon at Leckonby Stadium.
With the win, the Saints improved to 2-2 on the season and 1-0 in Liberty League play, while Union fell to 1-4 and 0-1. The win marks the first win over Union since 2016 and the first overtime win for the Saints since 2007.
Daniel Lawther passed 28-for-40 for a season-high 271 yards and three touchdowns, while
Oskar Baldwin led the receiving game with seven catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns.
Cole Salyards finished with five catches for 71 yards, while
Nicholas Huhtala finished with three catches, 24 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively,
Ryan Surhoff recorded a team-high 13 tackles, including one and a half for the loss of five yards.
Daniel George tallied nine tackles, while
Brennan Twombly finished with seven.
Liam Perkins tallied five, including a sack for the loss of seven yards. Seven different Saints recorded a pass breakup.
Fogler opened scoring for the Saints by kicking a 27-yard field goal to put the Saints up 3-0 after the first quarter of play.
Union responded with a field goal of their own early in the second quarter, tying things up 3-3.
Union quarterback Patch Flanagan put the Garnet Chargers first touchdown on the board on an 87-yard run. Francesco Pileggi's kick was good for the 10-3 lead.
Lawther connected with Baldwin for their first touchdown connection, capping a 75-yard run, and Fogler's kick was good to knot the game 10-10 before halftime.
The Garnet Chargers went on a run in the third, with a one-yard touchdown from Cam Fries and two field goals to build a 24-10 lead over the Saints by 14:56 of the fourth quarter.
The Saints responded well as Lawther and Baldwin connected for a second time with a 25-yard catch on the 67-yard drive bringing them within one touchdown. Eight minutes later, Lawther found Huhtala with a 15-yard pass. Both of Fogler's kicks were good as the Saints rebounded, tying the score 24-24 to force overtime.
St. Lawrence won the toss in overtime and opted to play defense. On the fourth play of Union's drive, Flanagan's pass was broken up by
Thomas Our and intercepted by
Savino Morelli to put the Saints on offense.
Fogler claimed the win for the Saints with a season-best 38-yard field goal in overtime.
Flanagan went 14-for-29 for 107 passing yards and one touchdown and also led Union's ground game with 204 yards on 17 attempts and a touchdown. Michael Fiore picked up 51 yards on 13 attempts for the Garnet Chargers. John Droggitis finished with 10 tackles, while Ethan VanderBrink finished with eight, five TFL's for the loss of 11 and 2.5 sacks for the loss of six.
Union finished with an 18-16 edge in first downs and finished with 405 yards of total offense to the Saints' 283. St. Lawrence converted on both red zone chances, while Union went 4-for-6.
The Saints head to Troy, N.Y. next weekend to take on RPI on Saturday, October 12. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
