The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team is set to begin their 2024-25 season this Saturday at the Mary Hosking Invitational hosted by William Smith College.
Last year, in their first season under Tavis Reiger, the team finished with a 12-8 overall mark and a 5-3 Liberty League record.
The Scarlet and Brown earned the fourth seed in the Liberty League playoff for their efforts but came up short in the First Round falling 5-4 to Union.
St. Lawrence returned a multitude of players from a season ago. With no seniors on the team, the upperclassmen are juniors,
Angelica Aksdal-Jansen,
Alexandra Fuller,
Molly Jespersen,
Abigail Sicuranza, and
Maya Stepic. That group will be bolstered by sophomores,
Ellie Fritz,
Ariane Karera,
Yvette Karera,
Sarah Oldland, and new-coming second-year
Mia McNamara.
Joining McNamara as a newcomer will be the Class of 2028. The four first years joining the lineup are
Kate Butler, Elisa Iuri,
Eleanor McDermed, and
Ashlyn Strobel.
The Saints return the bulk of their order including tremendous play at the top. After earning All-Liberty League accolades last season, Aksdal-Jansen and Jespersen return as the team's top players. Aksdal-Jansen (16-8) was named to the First Team for singles play, while Jespersen (14-8) was named to the Second Team. Both players were honored as First Team in doubles as a team with a 19-4 record.
Next in the order will be the Karera sisters, who dazzled in their first years in Canton. Ariane led the team a season ago with 20 singles wins and had a 20-7 record, while her sister Yvette went 16-7 in singles play. The two formed a formidable duo racking up a 16-4 doubles record.
Following the Mary Hosking Invitational, the Saints will head to Schenectady to take part in the Union Invitational before heading home to host the St. Lawrence University Invitational. The team will then close out their Fall schedule on September 20 weekend at the ITA Northeast Regionals at Skidmore College.
