The St. Lawrence University women's soccer team will open their 2024 season tomorrow in the North Country Classic at Sandy MacAllaster Field when the team hosts the University of Rochester in a 4 p.m. match. The squad will then line it up again on Saturday against SUNY Potsdam at 4 p.m, to close out the weekend.
A season ago, the Saints made it back to the Liberty League playoffs for the first time since 2019 after posting a 7-7-4 overall record and a 3-4-2 conference mark.
"We are so looking forward to the season ahead," said head coach
Sinead McSharry "This group of women represents St. Lawrence University with class and grace in all aspects of their lives. I'm proud to be part of this powerful collective. We can't wait to compete, grow, and celebrate the game that brings us so much joy."
The 2023 Scarlet and Brown team was led by defender
Mia Cence, who was named to the All-Liberty League second team, along with
Madison King-Thurber and
Sydney Keenan, who also earned honors as honorable mention All-League members.
Along with those three returning to the lineup, they will be joined by
Zoe Rogan, who was also an impact player, leading the team with nine points and four goals.
Lily Pleau was second on the team in scoring with two goals and an assist for five points in her second season in Canton.
The Saints return 26 players from last season and over 92% of the team's point production. Among the returners are the Class of 2024 comprised of
Darcie McDonough,
Maille McMahon,
Grace Mochnal,
Natalie Schock,
Emma Casey, and captains
Alyvia Ronning,
Jenna Durkin, and Cence.
While the team returns much of their point production, the Saints will have a new goalkeeper between the post in the senior,
Darcie McDonough. The netminder has 12 games and 358:31 minutes in goal during her first three years and owns a career 0.75 goals against average and a 0.842 save percentage to go with her 3-0-0 record. McDonough also has seven career combined shutouts alongside
Keely Snode '24.
McSharry and the Saints have added five first-years to the fold ahead of the season. The Class of 2028 consists of goalkeeper
Reagan Murphy, midfielders,
Lilly Losey and
Brooke Habinowski, and defenders
Paige McLaughlin and
Gwyn McGee.
Following the North Country Classic, the Scarlet and Brown will head to Nazareth next weekend before a three-game stretch against SUNY Geneseo, Oswego State, and Buffalo State. On September 24, the team opens their Liberty League slate against Union at Sandy MacAllaster Field as part of a three-game home stretch along with RPI and Plattsburgh State.
The Saints will have three themed games on their schedule this upcoming season. Against RPI, the team will celebrate their Professor Appreciation Game, followed by their Play With Pride Game against Plattsburgh. Their final theme game will be on October 12 versus RIT in their Breast Cancer Awareness Game. St. Lawrence will also host Skidmore on Senior Day on October 26.
