Arakelian Finishes With Three Points, Saints Fall to No. 20 Ithaca in League Play

Morgan Arakelian tallied a goal and two assists for the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team, but the Saints fell to the 20th-ranked Ithaca Bombers 12-7 on Saturday afternoon at Hall-Leet Stadium.

In addition to Arakelian's big game, Bella Hillman had a goal and an assist, while Jessica LaPlaca, Liz Evans, Kelsey Roth, Phoebe Spaeth, and Neve Ley all scored a goal. Brigette Gable and LaPlaca picked up four ground balls and Spaeth caused three turnovers.

The Bombers opened the game with a goal, but the Saints responded with three unanswered, put in the back of the net by LaPlaca, Arakelian, Evans. Ithaca then got a pair of their own, tying it at 3-3 going into the second quarter.

Ley and the Saints opened the second quarter with a goal one minute in to give the Scarlet and Brown the lead, but this lead didn't last long, as Ithaca scored the last four goals of the half, bringing a 7-4 lead into halftime.

Ithaca continued to build their lead in the next quarter. The Bombers used strong offensive play and broke up any attempts that the Saints were looking for. They scored five goals on their own, and the Saints only managed a single goal scored by Roth with one minute left, making it 12-5 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, the Saints held the Bombers scoreless and scored two goals of their own, but were unable to overcome the seven-goal deficit. Spaeth scored the first goal of the fourth and Hillman found the back of the net with five seconds left.

Sydney Phillips scored five goals and had two assists to lead the way for the Bombers, while Leigh Naturale had a hat trick herself. Lily Cody recorded four ground balls and forced two turnovers defensively, while Liney Dutchyshyn caused four turnovers.

Courtney Lynn finished with eight saves for St. Lawrence, while Lexi Held stopped 14-of-21 for Ithaca.

The Saints outplayed Ithaca in a multitude of categories, including winning the shots on goal battle 21-20, picking up 23 ground balls compared to Ithaca's 16, and beat Ithaca in forcing 16 turnovers over the Bombers' 12. St. Lawrence was just 16-25 on clear attempts.

The Saints look to bounce back at home in a non-conference matchup against SUNY Canton (5-4, 2-0) on Thursday, April 11.
