Arakelian, Evans Record Career Highs in Win Over SUNY Canton

Morgan Arakelian recorded a career-high nine points and Liz Evans had five goals, as the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team beat SUNY Canton 18-8 Thursday afternoon at Hall-Leet Stadium.

In addition to the career nights from Arakelian and Evans, Ashley Mudd and Keira Dodd each had two goals and an assist, while Phoebe Spaeth had two goals and caused two turnovers. Haley Sundstrom finished with four ground balls and seven caused turnovers, while Brigitte Gable also had a big night with four ground balls and five caused turnovers.

In a low-scoring first period, neither team scored in the first nine minutes, Liz Evans found the back of the Roos' net with 5:09 left in the quarter. The Roos responded by scoring the next two goals late in the quarter to take a 2-1 lead.

The Saints were electric in the second period, as they scored seven unanswered goals to start the quarter. Evans scored her second goal, and Arakelian had two goals and two assists, as the Scarlet and Brown took an 8-3 lead into half.

In the third, the offense cooled off a little bit, but Evans scored back-to-back goals a few minutes in within 37 seconds of each other to give the Saints a 10-3 lead. Spaeth added her second of the afternoon for the third goal of the quarter, but SUNY Canton came back with two goals nearing the end of the frame, making it 11-5.

In the fourth quarter, the Saints scored seven goals once again, showcasing their depth as ten players had a point on the afternoon for St. Lawrence. Arakelian had two more points and Evans scored once again in the fourth, scoring in every quarter en route to her career-high five total and the Saints 18-8 win.

Samantha Dayter and Maddy Caron led the Roos, each with five points on the day, combining for all but one goal and one assist for SUNY Canton. Goaltender Olivia Scott led the team picking up six ground balls, while Lindsey Wunder led the Roos with three forced turnovers.

Courtney Lynn had five saves for the Saints and Scott had nine for the Roos.

The Saints won the shots on goal battle 27-13, and picked up 31 ground balls as a team to the Roos 14. SUNY Canton had 29 turnovers on the day, while the Saints had 17. Both teams had four free position attempts, with the Saints scoring on two of these and the Roos scoring on three.

St. Lawrence improved to 3-8 with the non-conference win and SUNY Canton dropped to 6-5 with the loss.

The Saints will begin a four-game road trip starting with University of Rochester (7-4, 4-2) Saturday, as they return to Liberty League play at 2:30 p.m.
