Ley, LaPlaca Lead Saints in Loss at Rochester

Neve Ley and Jessica LaPlaca each had three goals for the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team, as they fell 15-10 at the University of Rochester, Saturday afternoon at Favour Stadium.

Ley's big day was shown in other aspects of the game as well. The junior from Weyland, Mass. also had three ground balls, four draw controls, and two caused turnovers. Kelsey Roth had two goals on the day, while Ellie Camp and Phoebe Spaeth both scored once. Kelsey O'Brien finished with five ground balls and Annie Alfieri had four, while Aria Lee contributed by forcing two turnovers.

In a back-and-forth first quarter, the Saints got goals from Ley, Spaeth, and Camp, as the score was 3-3 after 15 minutes.

LaPlaca scored a couple minutes into the second to give the Saints the lead, but Rochester tallied the next three. Ley scored again with 7:19 remaining, but the Scarlet and Brown trailed 6-5 heading into the half.

The Yellowjackets got two goals early in the third to grab a three-goal lead, the largest for any team on the day, but the Saints quickly responded with three goals within the span of a minute and 24 seconds to tie it back up. LaPlaca added her second, while Roth scored the other two for St. Lawrence, both of which were assisted by Ley. Rochester quickly responded by adding a pair of their own to make it a 10-8 game.

Ley scored her third goal to open the scoring in the fourth, but the Yellowjackets pulled away after that, scoring five of the games last six goals. LaPlaca scored the lone goal for the Saints in the last 11 minutes.

Alyssa Gorney had four goals for the Yellowjackets and Grace Crochiere and Anna Rogers both had three in their victory. Crochiere and Abbey Smith each had four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Courtney Lynn had three saves for St. Lawrence and Ava Saffren saved eight shots for Rochester.

The shots on goal and ground balls were even between the two Liberty League teams at 18 and 22 respectively. Rochester was a perfect 20-20 on clear attempts, while St. Lawrence was 19-24. The Yellowjackets got goals on 4-of-6 free-position attempts, the Saints were just 1-of-5.

With the loss, the Saints fell to 3-9 overall and 2-4 in conference play, while the Yellowjackets moved into third place in the conference at 5-2 and 8-4 altogether.

St. Lawrence will have some time off before they head to Skidmore (5-7, 3-3) on Friday, April 19 to take on the Thoroughbreds.
