No. 2 William Smith Outlasts Saints' Comeback Efforts

Liz Evans scored two goals and six other members of the Saints' squad scored, but the second-ranked William Smith Herons defeated the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team 12-8 on Friday at Hall Leet Stadium in Canton, N.Y.

In addition to the two goals for Evans, Morgan Arakelian, Jessica LaPlaca, and Neve Ley each had a goal and an assist, while Ellie Camp, Kelsey Roth, and Phoebe Spaeth tallied one goal apiece. Kelsey O'Brian led the way for St. Lawrence defensively with three ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Ley added three ground balls, two caused turnovers, and five draw control wins. Overall, the Saints played well on both ends of the field, keeping the No. 2 Herons on their toes.

Arakelian and the Saints scored the opening goal of the game and two of the first four, but then surrendered three straight, as the Scarlet and Brown trailed 5-2 at the end of the first.

After the Herons opened the scoring to start the second, back-to-back goals by Evans and Ley trimmed the William Smith lead to just two goals at 6-4. The Herons added a pair towards the end of the second to double up the Saints 8-4 at halftime.

In the third, goals by LaPlaca and Speath led to the Saints outscoring the Herons 2-1, as the William Smith lead diminished to 9-6 with 15 minutes left.

With 8:13 remaining in the game, a free-position goal by Roth put the Saints back within two goals once again, but they were unable to get any closer. William Smith responded with two more goals, as the Herons kept their perfect record intact with a 12-8 victory.

For the Herons, Natalie Daniels and Maddie Montgomery each had three goals and Katherine Murray had three points (2G, 1A).

Courtney Lynn finished the day with four saves for the Saints, while Maura Smeader saved ten of 18 for the Herons.

The Saints narrowly edged the Herons in shots on goal 18-16 and picked up more ground balls, beating William Smiths' 13 with 14 of their own.

The Saints fell to 2-7 on the year and 2-2 in Liberty League play. The defending Liberty League champions, William Smith continued their torrid start, improving to 10-0 and 4-0 in the conference.

St. Lawrence will matchup against No. 20 Ithaca tomorrow at 3 p.m., as they play their third straight game against a ranked team.
