Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Ley Plays Hero in Saints Comeback Route 11 Rivalry Win

With nine seconds to play in the fourth quarter, Neve Ley broke a string of ties and secured a 15-14 win for the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team over the Clarkson Golden Knights at Hantz Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Ley and Liz Evans each recorded four goals for the Scarlet and Brown, while Jessica LaPlaca finished with a hat trick. Caroline Hamilton tallied two goals and an assist, while Phoebe Spaeth and Jolie Osborne each scored once. Haley Sundstrom helped lead the defense with four ground balls and won four draw controls, while Brigette Gable, Annie Alfieri and Spaeth each caused two turnovers.

The Saints' offense struggled to start, as the Golden Knights outscored St. Lawrence 6-1 in the first quarter of play. The lone goal for the Saints came from the stick of LaPlaca.

LaPlaca scored her second of the game to start off the second quarter, but Clarkson scored two more to increase its lead to 8-2. LaPlaca secured the hat trick with her third of the game at 8:07 and a three-goal run for the Saints brought them back within three with 2:21 remaining in the first half. Clarkson's Madelynn Barnum scored her fourth of the game and Osborne scored for the Saints with 16 seconds left in the second to make it 9-6 at the break.

Back-and-forth action was the story for the start of the third quarter, until four-straight goals, including two from Evans and one each from Ley and Hamilton gave the Saints their first lead of the game at 11-10. Two more from Clarkson and a goal from Spaeth tied things up 12-12 heading into the final frame.

Clarkson's Makenna Cassin scored 31 seconds into the fourth quarter to give the Golden Knights a 13-12 edge. After about nine minutes of scoreless action, Hamilton scored her ninth of the season to tie it up 13-13.

The game would tie once more at 14-14 and with 1:27 to play in the fourth, Saints' goaltender Courtney Lynn stopped Barnum on a point-blank shot to keep the game tied. After the save from Lynn, Cassin was called for a green card to give the Saints an extra attacker. Ley scored on an odd-angled shot for the win with nine seconds remaining.

Barnum finished with five goals, two assists, four ground balls, and five draw control wins to lead Clarkson.

Lynn made 12 saves in the win, while Clare Tucker made two for Clarkson.

Clarkson outshot St. Lawrence 28-25, including a 26-17 shot-on-goal advantage. The Saints capitalized on all five of their extra-woman opportunities, while the Golden Knights only managed 2-of-8.

With the win, the Saints improved to 4-11 overall and 3-6 in Liberty League play, while Clarkson fell to 8-7 and 3-6.

St. Lawrence will host RIT on Saturday, April 27 at 12 p.m. for senior day and the regular season finale.
