Evans Records Hat Trick, Saints Fall to Union on the Road

Liz Evans recorded a hat trick, and Morgan Arakelian had a goal and two assists, as the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team lost 12-7 to the Union Garnet Chargers on Saturday afternoon in Schenectady, N.Y.

In addition to the big games from Evans and Arakelian, Caroline Hamiliton had two goals and Neve Ley added one. Brigette Gable led the Saints with three ground balls and four caused turnovers. Haley Sundstrom was also on point defensively, with two ground balls and forcing five turnovers.

Union held the Saints scoreless in the first quarter, but neither team took care of the ball very well, as a combined 16 turnovers led to a three-goal first period in favor of the Garnet Chargers.

Both teams scored a pair of goals in the second quarter. Arakelian got the Saints on the board by opening the scoring in the second to make the game 3-1. After surrendering two to Union, Ley scored a free-position goal, as the Saints trailed 5-2 after two quarters.

In a back and forth third quarter, the Saints trimmed the lead to two once again off a goal from Evans assisted by Bella Hillman. After this, Union was able to score three times and Hamilton scored twice for the Saints, as the Garnet Chargers had a three-goal lead at the end of a quarter for the third time in the afternoon.

The Saints were unable to get any closer than three, as they surrendered the next four goals in the last stanza. Evans added her second and third goals late, but without enough time left, St. Lawrence was unable to come back in their 12-7 deficit.

Gillan Joseph tallied four goals for the Garnet Chargers, while Anna Smith and Audrey Larson had two goals each.

Courtney Lynn recorded nine saves in net for the Saints and Sydney Widlitz stopped five for Union.

Union outshot the Saints 28-22 overall and 21-12 in shots on goal. In ground balls, Union won 19-16 and in clears, the Saints completed 16-of-22, while the Garnet Chargers got 17-of-19. St. Lawrence was 2-3 on their free position attempts, while Union was 4-7.

St. Lawrence fell to 3-11 overall and 2-6 in league play, while Union improved to 8-4 and 6-2 in the conference after the win.

The Saints will next be in action against the Clarkson Golden Knights in a rivalry game for their final road game of the regular season Wednesday at 4 p.m.
