The Saints went 3-0 in doubles and lost just two matches in singles play as the St. Lawrence University women's tennis team battled to a 7-2 win over Union on Friday afternoon in Schenectady, N.Y.
The Scarlet and Brown improved to 9-6 with the win and 3-2 in league play, while Union fell to 8-3 and suffered their first league loss.
In doubles, the matches ended in one, two, three order with the Saints on top in each. At one,
Angelica Aksdal-Jansen and
Molly Jespersen won 8-2 over Chara Meidani and Gracie Nicol, while at two the Karera sisters beat Kennedy Alexis and Luisa Arizpe-Sierra 8-5.
In the third spot, things were much closer.
Elena Styliades and
Abigail Sicuranza went to a tiebreaker point with Claire Langile and Skyler Semon. The Scarlet and Brown tandem came out on top by the score of 8-7 (7-4) to complete the doubles sweep.
In singles, Aksdal-Jansen went up 1-0 before losing in a tiebreaker to Nicol to tie the match at 1-1. The sophomore closed out the match with a 6-1 score to earn the win. At two, Jespersen also took her second win of the day defeating Meidani 6-2, 6-4.
In the third spot,
Ariane Karera took on Arizpe-Sierra and much like Aksdal-Jansen won the opening set before falling in the second. The newcomer won the final set 6-3 for the victory. At four,
Yvette Karera took on Skylar Semon and lost the first set 6-3 before bouncing back with a 6-4 win. She would win the tiebreaker 10-7 for her second win of the day along with her teammates.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back in action tomorrow at 10 a.m. when the team heads to Rochester.
