Personal-Best Performances Vault St. Lawrence to Second-Place Finish at Saints Ice Breaker

The St. Lawrence University women's track and field team used victories in both middle- and long-distance races to vault into second place overall at the season-opening Saints Ice Breaker in Canton, N.Y. Saturday.

The Saints had a strong finish on the track in distance races, registering a one-two finish in the 5000m. Olivia Bernier and Adriana Cecchetelli finished first and second in the event, with Bernier running a personal-best 18:38.45 to take first place and Cecchetelli blowing her personal-best out of the water with the first sub 19-minute run of her career, checking in at 18:51.59.

The Saints had a similar result occur in the field, with Emily Boswell and Lacey Eckert placing first and second for the Scarlet and Brown in the shot put. Boswell recorded a throw of 9.99m to secure the victory, while Eckert was right behind her at 9.92m. Four of the five athletes in the top five were St. Lawrence team members, with Lauryn Cruz and Rosemary Fleischmann also registering in the top five.

Margaret McNally had a strong performance for placement and broke a personal milestone in the process. She smashed her personal best in the 200m, placing first overall with a time of 27.71 in the event, beating her previous personal best of 28.09.

First time was the charm for Charlotte Blake, who began her outdoor collegiate career with a 11:52.13 time in the 3000m steeplechase, good enough for the victory in the event. Carly Zack was the other St. Lawrence competitor in the race, and she finished second with a time of 12:35.61.

Amelia Berthold took first place in the 100m hurdles, besting the field with a time of 18.28. She beat her nearest opponent, a Plattsburgh State hurdler, by six one-hundredths of a second.

Hannah Bennett was the Saints' top finisher in the 1500m, placing third overall with a time of 5:06.19. The first-year led the race for the first three laps, faring well in the first outdoor track and field meet of her collegiate career.

The Saints next compete in their first road outdoor meet, heading to Utica, N.Y. for the Pioneer Spring Invite on Saturday, Apr. 6.
