The St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team used strong first and fourth quarters to pick up their first win of the season, as they defeated Vassar 14-7 in Liberty League action on Sunday afternoon in Canton, N.Y.
Both
Morgan Arakelian and
Liz Evans tallied three goals and an assist, while
Neve Ley also finished with three goals for the Scarlet and Brown. Arakelian's second point of the day notched her 100th career point in Scarlet and Brown.
Jessica LaPlaca notched a goal and an assist, while
Ellie Camp finished with a pair of goals and
Phoebe Spaeth scored one.
Kelsey O'Brien led the Saints with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
The Saints got off to a hot start, shutting out Vassar 4-0 in the first quarter with goals from Spaeth, Evans, Arakelian, and LaPlaca.
The Brewers rallied a bit in the second quarter, outscoring the Saints 3-2 to bring the game back within three goals.
The teams traded goals to start the second half, but Vassar closed the scoring to just two goals, after Maeve Faigel scored at 12:55 of the third. Both teams tallied three goals apiece in the third frame and St. Lawrence held on to a 9-6 advantage heading into the final quarter.
St. Lawrence saw two woman-up goals in the fourth quarter both from Evans, while Camp, Arakelian and Ley also scored. The Saints outscored Vassar 5-1 in the final 15 minutes to secure their first win of the 2024 season. Â
Kali Ringler led Vassar with three goals, while Maeve Faigel finished with two goals and an assist. Emma Torkelson finished with four ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Emilia DiLiberto won eight draw controls.
Courtney Lynn made three saves in the win for the Saints, while Lauren Johns finished with 11 saves for Vassar.
St. Lawrence outshot Vassar 33-14, including 25-10 in shots on goal. The Saints also picked up 18 ground balls to Vassar's 13, while the Brewers held a 13-9 advantage in draws.
The win moves St. Lawrence to 1-5 on the season and 1-1 in conference play, while Vassar fell to 1-6 and 0-2.
The Saints will travel to Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. to take on Bard on Saturday, March 30 at 3 p.m.
