No. 8 Cardinals Defeat Saints, 14-5

A strong first half powered the eighth-ranked Wesleyan Cardinals to a 14-5 win over the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon in Middletown, Conn.

Liz Evans, Bella Hillman, Jessica LaPlaca, Morgan Arakelian and Phoebe Spaeth each tallied a goal for the Scarlet and Brown, while Evans, Arakelian and Caroline Hamilton each recorded assists. Spaeth also recorded four ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Annie Alfieri picked up three ground balls and fours caused turnovers.

Spaeth put the Saints on the score board first with her third goal of the season at 13:21, but the Cardinals would control the play for the remainder of the first, taking a 4-1 lead after the first 15 minutes.

In total a 9-0 run from Wesleyan gave the Cardinals a 9-1 lead heading into the final minute of the first half. Hillman then scored to make it 9-2, just ten seconds before the break.

The Cardinals outscored the Saints 4-0 in the third, increasing their lead to 13-2.

Evans tallied her seventh of the season with the woman-up advantage at 8:56 of the fourth and LaPlaca and Arakelian scored in the final two minutes of the game, but the early deficit would be too much to overcome.

Laura Baine finished with four goals for the Cardinals, while Sam DeLeo added three goals and two assists and Kiara Tangney finished with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Courtney Lynn finished with 11 saves for the Saints, while Izzy Weintraub and April Rowe each made two for Wesleyan.

The Cardinals finished with a 37-12 advantage in shots, and picked up 29 ground balls to St. Lawrence's 21.

The Saints fell to 0-5 on the season, while Wesleyan improved to 5-1.

St. Lawrence will return home to Canton to take of Vassar on Saturday, March 23 at 12 p.m.
