Senior Bella Hillman scored two goals and first-year Keira Dodd added the first career goal, but it was not enough, as the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener to SUNY Geneseo, 16-3, on the road.
The Knights jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes. Molly Brown opened the scoring just over two minutes into the game, while Alaina Reina scored a hat trick in just over six minutes of play.
After Geneseo added another early in the second, St. Lawrence scored their first of the game courtesy of Hillman at the 4:29 mark. The Saints struggled to build any momentum though, as the hosts tacked on two more goals to take a 9-1 lead at halftime.
The Saints broke through the Knights defense twice in the third period, as Dodd would post her first at the 6:24 minute mark followed by Hillman's second of the game at 2:32. Five more goals by Geneseo made a comeback attempt increasingly difficult for the Saints headed into the final period.
Two more goals by the Knights in the final stanza saw the lead expand to 16-3.
Morgan Arakelian tallied an assist in the effort for the Saints, while Courtney Lynn made 11 saves in net. Haley Sundstrom led the defense with three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Maddie Brown led Geneseo with four goals while four other players recorded two or more goals. Emily DeJohn stopped three shots in net, in the win.
St. Lawrence fell to 0-1, while the Knights improved to 3-0.
The Saints return to action next Sunday, March 10th, as they travel to Hartford, Connecticut to face Trinity College for an 11 a.m. matchup.
