Liz Evans scored three goals, but the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team opened Liberty League play with a 16-9 loss to RPI on Saturday afternoon in Canton, N.Y.
Evans led the Saints with three goals, while
Jolie Osborne and
Neve Ley each recorded two.
Jessica LaPlaca finished with a goal and an assist, while
Ellie Camp added one goal. Both
Brigette Gable and Ley picked up three ground balls, while
Haley Sundstrom caused four turnovers.
An evenly paced game to start, the Saints and the Engineers traded goals through most of the first.
Liz Evans tallied her fifth goal of the season to bring the game back within one, but the Engineers held onto a 4-3 lead after the first 15 minutes of play.
The back-and-forth battle continued to start the second quarter, with ties at 5-5 and 6-6. Megan Shay tallied back-to-back goals for the Engineers, just 14 seconds apart to give RPI an 8-6 halftime advantage.
RPI took over in the third, outscoring the Saints 4-1 through the first seven minutes to build a 12-7 lead, which they held onto heading into the fourth.
Shay tallied her seventh of the game increasing that lead to 13-7, before
Jolie Osborne broke through with two straight goals for the Scarlet and Brown making it 13-9.
The Engineers added four more goals down the stretch to seal the win.
Shay finished with eight goals and an assist for the Engineers, while Riley Eldredge won three draw controls and caused two turnovers.
Courtney Lynn made six saves for the Saints, while Jenny Canfield finished with 11 for RPI.
The Saints outshot RPI 33-28 and held an 18-17 edge in ground balls. RPI converted on 5-of-7 free-position shots.
St. Lawrence fell to 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in league play, while RPI improved to 2-2 and 1-0.
The Saints will travel to Middletown, Conn. for spring break to take on Wesleyan on Wednesday, March 20 at 3 p.m.
