Graduate student
Ben Kraws stopped a season-high 47 shots, and senior captain
Luc Salem ended the game in double-overtime to send the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 3-2 win over Colgate at the Class of 1965 Arena in the ECAC Championships Quarterfinal round.
St. Lawrence took a 1-0 series lead with the win and moved to within one win of a trip to Lake Placid.
The Saints improved to 12-18-5 on the year with the win, while Colgate fell to 16-15-4 with the loss.
The game started fast and furiously with both teams trading blows early.
Ty Naaykens, and
Drake Burgin had the best looks of the period for St. Lawrence but couldn't beat Carter Gylander. Kraws was put to the test early with a breakaway, a penalty kill, and numerous other looks but stood his ground to keep the game at 0-0 through 20 minutes.
After getting outshot in the first, the Scarlet and Brown came out of the break humming putting tremendous pressure on the Raiders.
Colgate counter-punched putting a pair of shots off the post before the Saints went on the power play. Late in the man-advantage, Burgin and Naaykens ran a give-and-go before finding
Jan Lasak in the slot. The sophomore one-timed the shot home to take the 1-0 lead.
Less than 30 seconds later, St. Lawrence struck again from the same spot on the ice. This time it was
Nicholas Trela and
Tomas Mazura that connected to find captain
Josh Boyer. The graduate student rifled the shot through traffic and in to improve the lead to 2-0 just 29 seconds later.
Kraws once again would make some great saves to close out the period in the second.
In the third, Colgate hit their third post of the game but finally was able to break through scoring on a power play of their own. The Raiders would then tie the game 13:17 into the third to make it a new ballgame.
Despite the home-friendly shot totals in the overtime period, it was the Saints that controlled a majority of the possession as both teams searched for the all-important goal.
Despite grade-A chances on both sides, the game would go to a second overtime after neither team found twine.
It took seven minutes and 24 seconds into the third for the game to conclude. Boyer was tasked with an offensive zone draw and attempted to take a shot off the drop. The puck bounced back to Salem, who had his first shot blocked, then corralled the loose puck and wired a shot through traffic and in to give the Saints the 3-2 win after 87:24 of action.
Kraws finished with a season-high 47 saves in the win, while Gylander came up with 30.
Both teams had a power play goal in the game with St. Lawrence going 1-for-1 and Colgate going 1-for-2.
The Saints will head back to the Class of 1965 Arena tomorrow night looking to end the series and earn a trip to the ECAC Semifinals in Lake Placid. The puck will drop at 7 p.m. tomorrow night.
