Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Four Saints Score as No. 7 St. Lawrence Defeats Harvard on Fifth-Year Night

Four members of the Saints squad put their name on the scoresheet and first-year goaltender Kassidy Lawrence picked up her second collegiate win, as the seventh-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team defeated Harvard 4-2 on Friday night at Appleton Arena.

Harvard put pressure on early, as Jenna MacDonald beat Lawrence with a high shot over her blocker for the 1-0 lead.

Just about four minutes later, an initial shot from Harvard's Eva Dorr was stopped by Lawrence, but Dorr collected her own rebound and fed Maria Pape, who fired a shot from the right circle past Lawrence on the power play.

At the end of the first period, St. Lawrence led 26-12 in shots, including 10-9 in shots on goal, but the Crimson led 2-0.

The second period was a complete 180 from the start and the Saints were on a roll and the defense was on fire, scoring three goals in the second to take the 3-2 lead.

Katina Duscio started things off by scoring her third goal of the season with a one timer from the right circle, beating Harvard's Emily Davidson.

The Saints' strong power play continued their reign, as Kristina Bahl sent a shot from the post and over Davidson's glove, to tie the game up 2-2.

After a bit of a scramble in the slot, another shot from the point gave the Scarlet and Brown the lead, as Melissa Jefferies corralled the puck and sent a wrister past Davidson.

At the end of two periods, St. Lawrence led 30-11 in shots on goal and 70-19 in attempts.

At 9:32 of the third, the Saints would break through once more, as Aly McLeod chased a Harvard defender down the boards, and Anna Segedi picked the puck off for a turnover and flipped a backhanded shot over the glove of Davidson for the 4-2 final.

The Crimson pulled Davidson late in the third to attempt a comeback, but a late penalty put her back in goal as the clock wound down.

"Harvard gave us another tough game as they always do," said head coach Chris Wells. "It's what we expected and we found a way to get on top of the game in the second. Our defense gave us a huge boost scoring the goals they did and Segedi gave us the insurance goal in the third."

Lawrence finished with 15 saves for the Scarlet and Brown, while Davidson made 36 for the Crimson.

St. Lawrence finished with a 89-28 advantage in shots attempts, including 40-17 in shots on goal. The Saints went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Harvard finished 1-for-3.

With the win, the Saints improved to 24-9-0 on the season and 17-4-0 in ECAC play, while Harvard fell to 5-21-2 and 3-17-1, respectively.

Prior to tonight's game, the Saints honored their two fifth-year teammates – Sirena Alvarez and Mae Batherson.

"Senior weekend has always been a great weekend for this program and tonight got it going in the right direction," Wells added.

The Saints will host Dartmouth in their final game of the regular season for senior day, tomorrow, February 17 at 3 p.m.
