Four players scored for the Saints, and
Tomáš Mazura dished out three assists on the night, but in the end, the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team would fall in overtime 5-4 to Princeton on Saturday night in Appleton Arena.
St. Lawrence moved to 9-16-3 on the season and 7-8-1 in ECAC play, while Princeton improved to 8-13-2, and 6-9-1 in league play.
With the one league point earned, the Saints moved to 23 on the year, tied with Yale for sixth in the league standings. St. Lawrence trails Union in fifth by two points, Clarkson in fourth by three points, and Colgate in third by five points. Â
The seesaw affair started in the first period when Adam Robbins got the scoring started for the Tigers 3:18 into the contest.
The lead would be short-lived as the Saints scored 2:04 later.
Mason Waite and Mazura collected assists on the goal as they got a pass to senior captain
Justin Paul in the slot. The forward ripped a shot through the five-hole of Ethan Pearson to knot up the game at 1-1.
The deadlock broke less than five minutes into the second when the Scarlet and Brown would take the lead. A faceoff win by Mazura fell back to
Greg Lapointe, who one-timed a slapshot off a Tiger defender. The puck would deflect into the corner and Mazura would scoop up the puck and find Lapointe again. The shot was once again deflected but this time went into the net for the 2-1 lead.
Following a Noah de la Durantaye goal for Princeton, St. Lawrence would once again score in short order. The Tigers had the Saints hemmed in the defensive zone with haevy pressure, but the Saints would counter as Mazura and
Jan Lasak were sprung for a 2-on-1. Mazura flipped a silky saucer pass over to Lasak, who danced around Pearson and scored for the team's third tally.
The Tigers would once again tie it in the second period to make it 3-3 at the second intermission.
A minute into the third period, St. Lawrence would capitalize on a turnover as
Tyler Cristall picked off a pass and found Felikks Gavars in the slot. The sophomore sniper wired a wrist shot home to take the 4-3 lead.
The Tigers would not go away as Nick Seitz tied the game four minutes later to help force the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, the Saints would be assessed an interference penalty putting them on the kill. St. Lawrence would kill off a majority of the penalty before a Tiger player hauled down a Saint defender before berating the officials leading to a minor and a ten-minute misconduct.
Despite heavy pressure, the Saints could not get the game-winner, and following the power play with 49 seconds left, the Tigers' Robbins would score to claim the win for Princeton.
Ben Kraws would finish the game with 26 saves, while Pearson came up with 22 on 26 shots.
Both teams would come up empty on the man-advantage with the Saints going 0-for-3 and the Tigers going 0-for-2.
The Skating Saints will take to the road for their penultimate road trip of the regular season next weekend when the team takes on Harvard on Friday night before heading to Hanover to take on Dartmouth.
