Season Recap: Men’s Soccer Rides 16-Game Unbeaten Streak to LL Runner-Up Finish in 2024

The St. Lawrence University men's soccer team finished the 2024 season with a 9-2-7 record and was unbeaten in the Liberty League at 5-0-4 earning a second-place finish in the conference playoffs.

The Saints began their campaign back in late August with a pair of 0-2 losses to SUNY Geneseo, and No. 13 SUNY Cortland. The Scarlet and Brown would rebound however the following week tying SUNY Oneonta 1-1 and defeating Hartwick 4-0 which would spark a long unbeaten streak.

St. Lawrence proceeded to go on a four-game winning streak defeating SUNY Canton (4-0), SUNY Potsdam (1-0), and RPI (1-0) before tying Ithaca (0-0) to begin October.

Another tie against Clarkson followed by a 1-0 win RIT set the Saints up for a marquee matchup in mid-October against No. 10 Vassar. After going down 3-1, the Scarlet and Brown rallied with two goals in the last 12 minutes to secure the tie on Sandy MacAllaster Field.

The following day St. Lawrence took down Bard 4-1 and followed it up with a pair of road wins the next weekend against Union (4-2), and Skidmore (1-0).

The Saints tied their final two regular season matches against No. 25 Plattsburgh (1-1), and Hobart (2-2) to extend their lengthy unbeaten streak to 14 games.

After earning a first-round bye, the Saints hosted No. 3 Skidmore in the Liberty League Semifinals. The Thoroughbreds took a late 1-0 lead in the contest, but the game was knotted up by St. Lawrence in the 89th minute. The match went to double-overtime where Sam Pijpers broke Skidmore's heart with a goal to send the Saints to the Championship match.

The championship, which was hosted by Vassar, was a spirited affair with both team's goalkeepers standing tall. George Charalambous turned in a career-high 11 saves to help send the game into overtime and eventually to PK's. Although the result went down as a tie to extend the unbeaten streak to 16 games, the Brewers would advance 4-3 on PK's to take the title.

St. Lawrence was well represented as seven players were named to all-league teams. Henry Brown, who was named Liberty League Player of the Year was named to the first team along with senior Max Mogul and sophomore Baker Diaz. Pijpers, Nicholas Petrone, and Will Baker were named to the second team, while Gustav Scheibler was named to the newly formed third team.

Brown and Mogul were represented once again when the two were named to the All-Region III team by the United Soccer Coaches.

Joining the two as All-Region III second-team selections was Charalambous, who in his lone season as a starter for the Saints, played and started in 17 games for the Scarlet and Brown in 2024. The goalkeeper posted a 9-1-6 record and was unbeaten in the last 15 games of his senior campaign. Charalambous was top-three in the Liberty League in goals against average (.769 | 3rd), shutouts (8 | T-1st), save percentage (.867 | 3rd), and saves (85 | 1st).
