The St. Lawrence University men's soccer team outshot its opposition 9-6 on the day, five of which came from sophomore
Grant Gilmer, but the Saints fell 3-0 against SUNY Geneseo in their season-opener on Friday at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
The Saints fell to 0-1 with the loss, while the Knights improved to 1-0.
Eric Edmonds had St. Lawrence's first scoring chance of the game in the 11
th minute but saw his shot sail high and to the right to keep the score at 0-0. Geneseo ended up striking first instead, as a foul in the box put Dylan Thody on the dot for a penalty kick, which he capitalized on to make it a 1-0 game.
Ryan Campbell and
Nicholas Petrone attempted to knot the game over the next 24 minutes, but two of the shots went wide, while Petrone had a shot stopped by Max Crothall.
In the final six minutes of the first half, Petrone once again had a look at the frame, but his shot was fired off the crossbar and out to keep the game at 1-0 at the half.
Goalkeeper
Evan Widrick kept the game at 1-0 in the 50
th minute when he came up with a stop on a Thody bid.
Another golden chance presented itself for the Saints in the 55
th minute when a beautiful ball was played into
Gustav Scheibler by Edmonds. The defender put two shots on the frame but was stopped twice by the Knights' goalkeeper.
Following the saves, Connor Guercia found Thody streaking up the field for his second goal of the game, making it 2-0. Gilmer came up with two more shots on target following the goal that were stopped, and instead Geneseo tacked on a third goal to go up three.
Down three goals, the Scarlet and Brown made a late push with six shot attempts in the final ten minutes but were unable to find the twine.
St. Lawrence held a 9-6 edge in shots on goal and had a 19-12 advantage in shot attempts in the game.
Widrick came up with three saves in the game, while Crothall had nine in the clean sheet.
The Saints will be back on Sandy MacAllaster Field on Sunday at 2 p.m. to take on SUNY Cortland.
