Grant Gilmer and
Nicholas Petrone each tallied goals on the day, but the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team fell 5-2 to Plattsburgh State on Saturday afternoon at the Field House Complex in Plattsburgh, N.Y.
With the result, St. Lawrence dropped to 0-3-0 on the year, while Plattsburgh improved to 3-0-1.
The Saints showed early resilience after conceding in the 11th minute, as Gilmer responded with a goal in the 21st to level the match at 1-1. A bad turnover by the Cardinal's goalkeeper came right to the foot of Gilmer, who fired the long ball over everyone and in. The forward's strike was his first of the season.
Plattsburgh answered quickly, retaking the lead just over a minute later with a goal from Tristan Laundree. The Cardinals carried that momentum into the second half, adding three more goals, two from Santiago Vargas, and one from Nicholas Espitia, to build a commanding 5-1 lead.
Petrone gave the Saints a late spark in the 80th minute, scoring his first goal of the season to cut the deficit to 5-2. Another turnover from Plattsburgh allowed the opening as the captain intercepted a lazy pass, and he fired a strike past the sprawling Matthew D'Ippolito. Despite the effort, the Saints couldn't close the gap in the final minutes.
St. Lawrence and Plattsburgh each had ten shots on goal in the contest, but the Saints held the 14-13 edge in shots on goal, while the Cardinals led 5-3 in corner kicks.
Goalkeeper
Zach Amato made five saves in the net for the Saints, while D'Ippolito came up with seven.
St. Lawrence will look to regroup and bounce back early next week as the Saints travel to Middlebury on Tuesday, September 9, to take on the No. 3 Panthers in a 4 p.m. match.
