Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 9 Saints Tie Bears 1-1, Win Shootout to Wrap Up Road Weekend

Abby Hehl tallied her third point of the weekend to lead the ninth-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 1-1 tie with Brown on Saturday afternoon in Providence, R.I.

With the tie, the Saints moved to 9-5-4 and 3-1-2 in conference play, while Brown moved to 6-5-1 and 4-5-1.

The Saints got off to a hot start as Tori Verbeek rang a shot off the post with a quick rush around the 11-minute mark of the first.

After the first 20 minutes, the shots on goal were even at seven apiece.

SLU found the iron for a second time, this time off the stick of Hillary Sterling, but the game remained deadlocked.

Quickly after Sterling's shot, Verbeek pulled the puck off the boards and drifted down below the goal line to find Abby Hehl. Hehl fired a quick shot over Anya Zupkofska's blocker for the 1-0 lead.

Less than two minutes later, Jade Iginla evened things up for the Bears with a one timer from the slot. The Bears gained some momentum off the goal from Iginla and peppered Emma-Sofie Nordström with a few shots looking to take the lead.

After the second period, Brown held a 19-13 advantage in shots on goal.

Both goaltenders were up to the task in the third, keeping the game knotted 1-1 and eventually sending the game to overtime.

St. Lawrence had solid chances from Sarah Marchand, Melissa Jefferies, Verbeek and Taylor Lum in the extra frame, including shots of the crossbar from Marchand and Jefferies, but the final remained tied 1-1.

In the shootout, Hehl pulled a trick shot on Zupkofska, while Kiley Mastel ripped a shot to the top corner and Sarah Thompson scored on the backhand. Kassidy Lawrence stepped in and stopped four shots to give the Saints a 3-2 shootout win.

"It was another game like many before, both teams with great chances and excellent goaltending," said head coach Chris Wells. "Tonight had to be the most posts and crossbars hit in a game I've been a part of. We had at least five and possibly six."

"We are off for a week and everyone will be able to recharge and come back and finish the semester with two home games. I really liked how we finished the game today, we had a great penalty kill with six miuntes to go and then applied some pressure late to win in regulation!

Brown finished with a 34-27 shot advantage.

The Saints are off next weekend for Thanksgiving and will return to action the first weekend of December when they host Harvard and Dartmouth at Appleton Arena. Game times are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

"Happy Thanksgiving to all our fans and we will see you in December, Wells added!"
