Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 6 Clarkson Defeats No. 9 Saints in Non-Conference Action

Emma-Sofie Nordström recorded 33 saves, but a late third period goal and an empty netter gave the sixth-ranked Clarkson Golden Knights a 2-0 win over the ninth-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

Saturday's game looked a lot like Wednesday's, as the first two periods remained scoreless and both goalie's were up to the task keeping the game deadlocked 0-0.

After the first 20 minutes, Clarkson held a slight 8-7 edge in shots on goal.

With 2:30 to play in the second, Tori Verbeek looked to give St. Lawrence the edge, going one-on-one with Clarkson goaltender Julia Minotti, but Minotti went down for the leg save.

Equally, the play headed back down the ice and Nordström shut the play down for a battle of the goaltenders.

The Saints sent a flurry of shots on net as the clock wound down in the second, but the game remained tied 0-0 and the Golden Knights held a 27-21 advantage in shots.

The Golden Knights found the back of the net with six minutes to play in the third. A bad turnover down low, gave the Knights the puck and Anne Cherkowski sent a low shot past Nordström for the 1-0 lead.

Clarkson sealed the win with a long-range empty netter from Haley Winn for the 2-0 final.

"Tough break for our team today," said head coach Chris Wells. "I thought we played a solid game. Both games this week were back and forth with each team getting their chances. Clarkson executed one more play than we did today and that was the difference."

"It's one of the better games we have played over here in a while, and we had good belief right up until the end. We grew another step closer to getting to where we want to be this week with these games regardless of the outcomes. Players are getting better in a lot of areas that will pay off each weekend in our league."

Nordström recorded 33 saves for the Saints, while Minotti finished with 27 for Clarkson.

Clarkson finished with a 35-27 advantage in shots on goal and outshot the Saints 66-59 overall. Neither team was able to capitalize on the power play, both going 0-for-3 on the afternoon.

St. Lawrence moved to 8-5-3 on the season, while Clarkson improved to 10-3-1.

The Saints hit the road next weekend to take on Yale and Brown, November 22-23. Game times are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday vs. the Bulldogs and 3 p.m. on Saturday against the Bears.
