Box Score Cara Vredenburg was a stalwart between the pipes, making 12 saves, and Lily Gubbins recorded both Saints goals, but the St. Lawrence University field hockey team dropped their Saturday morning road contest 3-2 to Rensselaer in double overtime.

The loss drops the Saints' overall record to 5-6, and their conference record to 1-2.

Gubbins wasted no time getting the Scarlet and Brown on the scoreboard, scoring two minutes into the contest. But Rensselaer had a response and were able to tie the game three minutes later.

The two teams then played a tie game for a large portion of the contest, with Vredenburg keeping her team in the game by making multiple big saves. The game went to halftime tied 1-1, with RPI outshooting the Saints 13-1.

St. Lawrence benefitted from timely scoring again at the 40-minute mark, when Gubbins notched her seventh goal of the season to give St. Lawrence a 2-1 lead. However, the Engineers were able to rebound again and tied the game four minutes later.

The two teams battled until the end of regulation time tied a two-goals apiece. The first overtime frame solved nothing, but the host Engineers finally solved Vredenburg again with a blast 52 seconds into double overtime. That handed the Saints their first conference loss of the season in their third game of the year.

RPI outshot the Saints 31-5 in the contest. All five shots the Saints took found the net, while only 15 of Rensselaer's challenged Vredenburg. Gubbins and Caroline Hamilton both had two shots. Maddy Shaw added one.

The Saints resume conference play with another road contest on Friday, October 18 at Rochester.
