Lily Gubbins scored two goals and took seven shots, and
Stella Gizzi stopped a career-high 19 shots, but the St. Lawrence University field hockey team fell to Vassar 5-4 in double overtime Sunday at Hall-Leet Stadium.
The result drops the Saints' overall record to 5-8. They now hold a 1-5 mark in league play ahead of their final conference game. Vassar improved to 9-5 and 4-1 overall in the win.
"I was really proud of the way we battled after a tough game on Friday," said Saints head coach
Fran Grembowicz. "We were able to shake that off and play together as a unit in a very competitive conference game. I thought we worked the ball well up the field, and Stella did a nice job in the net with 19 saves. We will continue working toward next weekend where we will wrap up league play."
Vassar opened the scoring at 8:35 of the first, and the Saints trailed 1-0 at the break.
Lily Gubbins tied the game at 26:02 of the second on an assist from
Maddy Shaw. The Saints then found themselves in the lead off a
Hannah Gubbins marker, putting the St. Lawrence and Brown ahead 2-1 with a goal assisted by
Garen Steiner. Vassar tied it again, however, with a buzzer beater at the end of the second half.
St. Lawrence continued to find their offensive touch in the third. They regained the lead about six minutes into the second half when
Lily Gubbins scored her second goal of the day, set up by
Hannah Gubbins on a diving play heading toward goal. Vassar tied it again shortly after. Gizzi kept the game level from there, making five saves in the third period and five more in the fourth.
Shaw gave the Saints a 4-3 lead with just over seven minutes to go in the fourth, slipping a rebound past Vassar netminder Kendra Pitts. Vassar answered late, scoring with just over a minute to go to force overtime, and the teams played a scoreless first overtime. In the second overtime, Vassar's Julia Morris scored the game-winner.
Lily Gubbins finished with two goals and seven shots, four of them on goal.
Hannah Gubbins and Shaw each had a goal and an assist, and Steiner and Lehr each added an assist. Gizzi made 19 saves, a career-best by six. St. Lawrence led in penalty corners 17-11, while Vassar held a 33-25 edge in overall shots.
The Saints next take the field on Saturday, October 24 at Rochester as they wrap up league play before taking on Cortland at home to complete their season on Wednesday, October 28.
