The No. 10 St. Lawrence University special teams shined with four power-play goals and
Aly McLeod scored the game-winning goal to lead the Scarlet and Brown to a 6-3 non-conference win over the Syracuse Orange on Tuesday night in Syracuse, N.Y.
Â
The Saints' special teams got going early with a
Julia Gosling first-period power-play goal.
Abby Hustler carried the puck across the top of the circle and passed to Gosling, who sent a slap-shot that beat Syracuse goalie Allie Kelley five-hole.
Â
Hustler would then add an even-strength goal on a rocket-of-a-shot, that beat Kelley over her glove.
Â
SLU dominated the first frame outshooting Syracuse 26-5, taking a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
Â
The Orange would respond in the second period. First, Johal Darci scored on a power-play, and then Syracuse's Katie Holmes tied the game at two at 5:13.
Â
St. Lawrence braced the swing in momentum and produced a strong third period, beginning with McLeod's goal. The senior forward carried the puck into the offensive zone on a 2-on-1 opportunity and fired a shot past Kelley's blocker to give the Saints the lead.
Â
Seconds later, de-ja-vu, on the power-play. Gosling corralled a pass from Hustler and froze multiple Syracuse penalty killers and beat an outstretched Orange goaltender for her second player-advantage goal of the game.
Â
Syracuse would cut the lead back to one, but the special teams stepped up again. With just under seven minutes to play in the third period, Syracuse's Sarah Thompson was sent off for a five-minute major for hitting from behind. Â
Mae Batherson took full advantage of the five minutes, scoring two goals on the power play and helping seal the win for the Saints. Â
"We put 71 shots on net, hit five posts, and converted on a bunch of power play's to get the win tonight," said head coach
Chris Wells. "We scored some nice goals, which we had to, as Kelley was positionally sound making many saves all night."
Sirena Alvarez and
Kassidy Lawrence shared the net for the Saints in tonight's win. Alvarez finished with nine saves, while Lawrence recorded five. Allie Kelley tallied 65 stops for the Orange. Â
SLU outshot Syracuse by a whopping 103-24 margin in attempts and 71-17 in shots on goal. Â
St. Lawrence improved to 16-8-0 on the season, while Syracuse fell to 4-18-2. Â
"This was a good game to build off of as we head back into league play this weekend," Wells added.
The Saints will continue their road stand, as they return to ECAC play and travel to Brown and Yale this weekend, January 19 and 20.Â
