Junior alternate captain
Abby Hustler became the second member of the Saints' squad to join the Paul Flanagan '80 Century Club this season, as she recorded three assists and the No. 10 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team shutout Brown 4-0 on Friday evening in Providence, R.I.
Brown held the slight edge to start the first period, but the Saints turned up the heat in the latter part of the frame, as
Anna Segedi tallied her 12th goal of the season, beating a sprawling Kaley Doyle for the 1-0 lead.
Segedi finished with the lone goal in the first for the lead on the scoreboard, but the Bears held a slight 11-9 edge in shots on goal.
Next on the scoresheet for the Saints was
Kennedy Wilson.
Rachel Bjorgan pulled the puck off the boards and found
Mae Batherson at the point. Batherson fired a shot from above the left circle and Wilson capitalized on the redirect for her fourth goal of the season and the 2-0 lead.
St. Lawrence controlled the majority of play in the second, leading 24-16 in shots on goal after two periods.
With 3:47 to play in the third, Bjorgan picked up the puck in the neutral zone, beat out a Brown defender and scored a shorthanded breakaway goal increasing the Scarlet and Brown's lead to 3-0. Hustler assisted on the play.
The last strike for the Saints came off the stick of
Aly McLeod. Hustler circled to the right of Doyle, sent a shot on net and after a bounce and a tip from McLeod, the Saints finished with the 4-0 final. With her third assist of the evening, Hustler tallied her 100th career point.
"We kept getting more momentum as the game went on and we were able to pull away for the win," said head coach
Chris Wells. "Emma made some great saves early to keep them off the board. The game could have been 3-3 after one with the chances both teams had."
Emma-Sofie Nordström recorded her fifth career shutout with 26 saves on the night, while Doyle finished with 33 saves for the Bears.
The Saints finished with a 37-26 advantage in shots on goal and a 63-40 advantage in overall attempts. Neither team was able to capitalize on the power play, as the Saints went 0-for-2 and Brown finished 0-for-4.
"Once again everyone had a piece of the win tonight," added Wells. "A nice short handed goal by Rachel and a hard working goal that was a result of 4 or 5 shifts in a row by Kennedy. Meehan is always a tough place to come in and get three points and tonight wasn't any different."
With the win, St. Lawrence improved to 17-8-0 on the season and 10-3-0 in ECAC play, while Brown fell to 8-11-1 and 4-8-1.
The Saints will make the trip to New Haven to take on the Yale Bulldogs, tomorrow January 20 at 3 p.m.
