Anna Segedi's two goals and Emma-Sofie Nordström's 25 save shutout led the 10th-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey to a 3-0 victory over the RPI Engineers on Saturday afternoon in Canton, N.Y.
The first period was relatively uneventful with each team generating a few chances. RPI outshot the Saints 8-6 in the scoreless period.
St. Lawrence took control of the game in the second period, as the Saints were able to utilize their faster pace of play to grab the game's first goal.
Abby Hustler chased down a stretch pass into the RPI defensive zone, made a wide turn, and found a cutting
Katina Duscio. The sophomore defender sent a shot towards Engineer goaltender Amanda Rampado, and Segedi sent home the rebound into a wide-open net.
Later in the second period, on SLU's third power-play opportunity, Segedi extended the lead to two on another rebound goal. From the blueline,
Mae Batherson fired a slapshot that hit Rampado's blocker-side pad and popped out backdoor. Segedi then corralled the rebound and beat the sliding Engineer goaltender.
The Saints outplayed the Engineers in the middle frame, outshooting them 13-5, and led 2-0 going into the second intermission.
The third period resumed the more even pace of play from the first period. Each team had a power-play opportunity, but were unable to score respectively.
St. Lawrence sealed the shutout victory with a late goal by
Katina Duscio.
"We came out strong again today and that gave us some confidence," said head coach
Chris Wells. "RPI matched our play and the game was even for long stretches. We were able to capitalize on a few line rushes and a power play to get the win."
Nordström was strong throughout the game and finished with 25 saves. The sophomore goalie finished the weekend with 46 saves, leading the Saints to two shutout victories. RPI's Rampado had 24 saves in the loss.
St. Lawrence finished the afternoon 1-for-4 on the power-play, while RPI was 0-for-2.
"We moved the puck as well as we have all year and received efforts from everyone today," Wells added. "This league in the second half is like a sprint and it's important to get the points when you can."
The Scarlet and Brown improved to 15-8-0 overall and 9-3-0 in ECAC with the win, and RPI fell to 9-13-3 and 4-12-0 respectively.
The Saints have a quick turnaround as they make the short trip to Syracuse for a non-conference matchup with the Syracuse Orange on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
