Saints Take Tight Loss Against Union

While the St. Lawrence Saints volleyball team dropped their senior day contest to Union, the 3-0 scoreline doesn't reflect the competitiveness of the match. St. Lawrence was right in it against 8-6 Union, losing each set in tight scores of 25-21, 29-27 and 25-22.

"I thought we played very well and Union was simply the better team," said Shelly Roiger,  I'm content with how we found ways to score because Union is so sound defensively and if you look at the box score, you can see how evenly matched these two teams were today.  There were a lot of long rallies and we needed to have 18 good contacts. We would have 17 and Union would execute the 18th. That was the difference.

"This team is so close to being very good but the 20s and closing out sets continue to be our Achilles heel. We have to execute better when the stage is big and the lights are bright and that's a combination of confident mindset and the culmination of quality contacts. It's controllable and there's no doubt in my mind that we will get it done.  Even though we weren't able to earn the victory, today was a great effort by the team and they played hard."

Roiger went on to say she felt her team left it all on the court for their three graduating seniors – Katrina Henrich, Jade Masiclat and Vivian Zymeck. These three were honored before the game for their contributions to the Saints volleyball program over their years in the North Country.

Zymeck had a big game on the defensive side of the ball, a team-high four blocks and adding 12 digs, good enough for second on the Saints after Vanessa Latam's 13 digs. Araiza Acum-Santos led the way offensively, earning 14 kills. Zymeck was second with 13.

The Saints now have a two-week period with no game action before hitting the road to take on Ithaca College on Friday, Oct. 6.
