Ithaca's Strong Start Leads Saints to Straight Set Loss

The St. Lawrence Saints volleyball team dropped a straight sets contest to Ithaca College Friday night, falling 3-0 on the road.

The loss drops the Saints record to 1-2 in Liberty League play and 4-8 overall in 2023. The loss marks just the second time in 2023 that St. Lawrence has lost two straight games, after they dropped a road contest at Union Saturday, Sept. 23.

The host Bombers got off to a hot start, limiting the Saints to just six points in the opening set. They got there by kicking it off with a 12-0 run to earn a large lead over St. Lawrence, before Araiza Acum-Santos broke that streak with a kill. Ithaca ended the set with a second run, scoring six straight points to end it 25-6.

Ithaca continued to display strong starts in the second, when they went up 11-1 on St. Lawrence to kick off the second. Kori Meissner then had a service ace to kick off a 5-0 run for the Saints, closing the gap to 11-6. Lily Snide also earned a kill during that sequence. The teams traded points until the end of the set, but the Bombers' strong start carried them to a 2-0 lead with a 25-15 win in the second.

The Bombers then had a similar performance in the third set. They were beneficiaries of strong offensive play from Ella Graper, who helped Ithaca win the third set by a final of 25-14. Graper also led the team in points with 13 over the contest.

It's a quick turnaround for the Saints, who now head to Rochester, N.Y. for the RIT Invite Saturday, where they take on the Tigers at 2 p.m., then follow it up with a neutral site contest in the same location against Nazareth at 4:30 p.m.
