The St. Lawrence Saints volleyball team got similar results in both of their Saturday contests in Rochester, N.Y. – but they weren't on the winning side of either.
The Saints first fell in a Liberty League matchup to RIT 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 15-25, 18-25), then dropped their second game at the RIT Invite to Nazareth, also by a 3-1 (21-25, 13-25, 27-25, 17-25) final score. The losses bring St. Lawrence to a 4-10 overall record, and a 1-2 record in conference play.
Despite the results, Saints head coach
Shelly Roiger sees ability within her team to turn a corner and improve on their current record.
"I still believe this team is capable of playing much better volleyball than what we are demonstrating," said Roiger. "We just need each and every player to understand the importance and value of executing their role. Volleyball is a beautiful sport in the sense that it takes everyone. You can't move on while leaving others behind. I hope our team can grow in their confidence of themselves and their teammates so we can push forward together."
The Saints won their first set of the day in their 2 p.m. game against RIT, as they took a tight set by a 25-22 final score.
Vivian Zymeck and
Kori Meissner had the lions's share of the Saints' offense in that opening set.
However, after a 25-22 win for RIT to tie the match up at 1-1, the Tigers wouldn't give up another set victory and took a 3-1 win away from match one.
The Saints then had a quick turnaround before facing off against Nazareth in game two, where they played at 4:30 p.m. directly after their RIT contest. Nazareth was able to take advantage of the rapid changeover between games for the Saints and went up 2-0.
St. Lawrence didn't fold though, and nearly led wire to wire in a competitive third set. But Nazareth kept the score close for most of the set, taking one lead (14-13) and limiting the Saints' largest lead of the set to three points. While St. Lawrence won the set 27-25, Nazareth ended it in the fourth.
The Saints now head to William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y. for another road match, with this one coming in the midweek on Wednesday, Oct. 11. The game's start time is 7:30 p.m.
