Vivian Zymeck led the way with 9.5 points, but it was service errors which cost the St. Lawrence University volleyball team in their midweek matchup at William Smith College. They fell 3-0 (18-25, 13-25, 17-25) after committing 13 service errors, compared to the Herons' eight.
Â
"Anyone who saw the match figured out pretty quickly that our serving game completely abandoned us, said
Shelly Roiger, the Saints' head volleyball coach. "It unfortunately turned into a mental piece that just snowballed on us. It's hard to win when you don't force the opponent to make plays, no matter what the sport is."
Â
St. Lawrence came out of the gate strong and held a lead early in the first set, getting good early offensive output via kills from Zymeck and
Araiza Acum-Santos. William Smith battled back in the mid portion of the set, scoring seven straight points after a timeout and that brought the score from 12-9 Saints to 16-12 Herons. They were able to ride that momentum to a 25-18 set win.
Â
William Smith then took the first six points of the second set to provide themselves with a significant cushion in the second, leading to them going up 2-0 with a 25-13 set win.
Â
The third set saw the Herons take a 5-2 lead early, but St. Lawrence got the ball back after a Maysie Malinaric service error for William Smith, and the Scarlet and Brown took advantage of their opportunity. They scored the set's next four points to go up 7-5, with offense coming from two Zymeck, a Herons attack error, and a
Maggie Layman service ace. However, the Herons were able to climb back into the lead and wouldn't relinquish it, earning the sweep of the Saints.
Â
The Saints will now embark on an exciting road trip, as the head to Virginia for three games this weekend in Fredericksburg, Va. against Christopher Newport, Mary Washington, and Virginia Wesleyan. Mary Washington is ranked No. 22 in the nation, while Virginia Wesleyan is undefeated in conference play this season.
Â
"We're excited for the experience to spend this time together during our midterm break and I'm confident these three opponents will prepare us well for the remainder of the season," said Roiger.
