Saints Drop First Contest in Virginia, Falling to CNU in Straight Sets

The St. Lawrence University volleyball team began their trip to Virginia with a 3-0 loss to Christopher Newport Friday evening in Newport News, Va.

Services aces were the name of the game for the Captains, as they aced the Saints 15 times en route to the victory.

"I thought we played a solid game against an excellent program," said Shelly Roiger, St. Lawrence head volleyball coach. "We continue to struggle at first contact, but I like what I'm seeing defensively.

"We played a similar team (Ithaca) last Friday, and we played scared. We played with greater purpose tonight and I'm proud of the team for that adjustment and raising the bar in terms of their expectations."

Julia Gleason served three straight aces to start the match off on the right foot. Angie Barrera added the Captains' fourth ace of the set shortly after. Kills from Samantha Dorn, Simara Alexander, and Macy Burk helped CNU close down the first set, taking four of the final six points.

The Captains totaled six aces in the second set. The Captains hit .346 in the second set and held the Saints to a .000 percentage, taking the set by a final of 25-8.

The third set was even statistically, but it was the Captains' service aces which set them apart and allowed them to edge out St. Lawrence to give them a sweep of the Saints and their 12th straight win – they had five of them to the Saints' one.

St. Lawrence continues their tour through the Old Dominion Saturday, when they face No. 22 nationally ranked Mary Washington.
