Game Recap: Softball |

Saints Fall to Bombers in Two Pitching Duels

The St. Lawrence University softball team gave up just four runs in a twin bill against an Ithaca team that has averaged that many per game, but the Bombers held the Saints scoreless and won the doubleheader 1-0, 3-0 on the penultimate day of conference play.

St. Lawrence 0, Ithaca 1
The first game of the double header was a pitcher's duel. Ithaca scored in the bottom of the second off two singles, and other than that neither team allowed a baserunner until the bottom of the fifth inning. Vivian Johnson broke up the Bomber's no-hitting with a lead off double, and Cora Ferguson worked a walk to put the winning run on first base, but a pair of fly outs and a strike out ended the game.

Sofia Berryhill pitched a gem in the circle, giving up just three hits and one run in six innings, and struck out four.

St. Lawrence 0, Ithaca 3
Game two was a similar story, though each team got their bats going a bit more. The Bombers scored three runs through two innings to get on the board early. The Saints finished with four hits, though never had more than one in an inning. Their best shot came in the fifth when Zola Braswell hit a lead off single through the right side, and Emily Siansky moved her over with a sacrifice bunt, but that's as far as she would get.

Olivia Caporale started game two, and Layne Fritz relieved for five innings and struck out two.

St. Lawrence drops to 4-9 in conference play and 8-23 overall, while Ithaca improves to 25-10-1 overall and 10-4 in the Liberty League. The Saints' final regular season game is set to start at noon on May 7th against Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. with a chance to secure the final spot in the Liberty League Tournament.
