Cora Ferguson recorded three RBI and
Layne Fritz earned her third win of the season as the St. Lawrence University softball team topped Skidmore 3-0 in game one and fell 3-4 in the second game to earn their first league win on Sunday afternoon in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
St. Lawrence 3, Skidmore 0
In the first game of the twin bill, Fritz pitched five and a third scoreless innings, giving up five hits.
Sofia Berryhill earned the save, recording the final five outs without allowing a baserunner.
The Saints scored thrice in the top of the first on three hits.
Stella VanGee and
Meredith Rose reached base, and Ferguson doubled to right center to score both.
Sofia Camillieri then singled to right center to bring Ferguson across the plate.
Skidmore's best chance came in the bottom of the third. Back-to-back lead off singles put two on, and a sacrifice bunt put them in scoring position with one out, but Fritz earned a backwards K and a ground out got them out of the jam.
VanGee went 3-4 as the Saints recorded seven hits and earned four walks.
St. Lawrence 3, Skidmore 4
The hosts stopped their scoreless streak in the bottom of the first inning in the second game. The Saints looked posed to earn the run back in the second inning. Camillieri and
Tori Rotundo both reached base, and
Zola Braswell moved them to scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. The Thoroughbreds defense did its job, throwing both Camillieri and Rotundo out at home on consecutive plays.
After Fritz pitched a perfect second inning, striking out two, shortstop
Vivian Johnson worked a five-pitch walk to start the top of the third. A Rose single to right made it runners on the corner. Ferguson hit her second double of the afternoon to score Johnson and move Rose to third. The left fielder was unable to make a play on an
Olivia Caporale fly which brought home Ferguson and Rose and the Saints led 3-1.
Skidmore got all three runs back in the bottom of the inning, all unearned, and Berryhill relieved Fritz and threw a three-pitch strike out to get out of the inning. Neither team was able to bring a runner home and Skidmore secured the game two win 4-3 to split the day.
Rose went 3-4 in the second game, and Camillieri had her second multiple hit game of the season as the Saints again had seven hits.
Fritz pitched two and two third innings, striking out a pair and giving up zero earned runs. Berryhill struck out three in three and a third innings, giving up just one hit.
The Saints improve to 4-16 and 1-3 in the Liberty League. Skidmore also is 1-3 in conference play and are 8-15 overall.
They travel to SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday for a doubleheader with games at 3:30 and 5:30 before returning to league play next weekend, hosting Rochester and RIT for Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders.
