Johnson and Ferguson Each Triple in Clarkson Doubleheader

Vivian Johnson had four hits on the day and scored twice as the St. Lawrence University softball team lost a pair to their route 11 rivals in their conference openers on a sunny Saturday afternoon on Saints' Softball Field.

St. Lawrence 0, Clarkson 3
The Saints had five hits in the first game but were unable to bring any runs across. Vivian Johnson hit a two-out triple in the third inning and was left stranded. The Saints had two hits in the fifth, both Emily Harvey and Stella VanGee hit balls to left center, but Harvey was caught stealing and a pop-up left VanGee at first.

The Golden Knights put two runs up in the fifth, and another in the sixth. Meredith Rose reached on an error by the left fielder and managed to get to second base. Cora Ferguson moved her over to third on a ground out, but the inning ended with a pair of fly outs. Clarkson secured the win with three up, three down in the bottom of the seventh.

Jacee Casebolt pitched two and two third, striking out a pair. Layne Fritz struck out one in two innings, and Sofia Berryhill struck out two in the final two and a third.

St. Lawrence 6, Clarkson 8 (9 innings)
Clarkson scored first again in game two, but the Saints struck back in the third inning. Johnson and Rose reached on singles, and Ferguson loaded the bases when she reached on an error. Berryhill hit a blooper to shallow left to bring Johnson across the plate and tie the game.

In the fourth inning the Saints kept it going when Rotundo beat out an infield single she slapped to the shortstop. Catcher Emily Siansky moved her to second on a sacrifice bunt. VanGee singled to right field, and an error scored Rotundo to give the hosts their first lead of the day.

The Golden Knights evened the score in the sixth, and in the bottom of the inning Johnson and Rose each reached base. Ferguson hit a triple to dead center field to score them both. Olivia Caporale hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Ferguson and the Saints led 6-3. Clarkson rallied with two-outs in the seven to tie the game and send it to extras. In the top of the ninth they scored two-more and won 8-6.

Johnson went 3-5 in the game and scored twice. Ferguson and Rose each had two RBI. Berryhill pitched 8.1 innings and struck out four. Fritz pitched two thirds of an inning.

Clarkson improves to 12-8 and earned the sweep in both team's first conference series. The Saints fall to 3-15 and head to Skidmore for a twin bill on April 16th with game one scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
