Saints Drop Pair to Plattsburgh

The St. Lawrence University softball team lost a twin bill to the Cardinals of Plattsburgh in their final non-conference game before they open league play on Saturday. The Saints lost 3-8 and 4-9 on a sunny Wednesday afternoon in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

St. Lawrence 3, Plattsburgh 8
The Saints gave up three first inning runs but got them all back in the third. First-year catcher hit a lead off single, and Stella VanGee moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Meredith Rose hit a double to left center field to bring Siansky home. Relieve pitcher Sofia Berryhill singled to right next and score Rose. Berryhill then advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and scored on a Cora Ferguson single to left.

The Cardinals put up two more in the fifth, and a double with the bases loaded in the sixth made it 3-8. The Saints were unable to rally in the seventh.

Berryhill relieved Olivia Caporale in the first inning and pitched four and two thirds innings. Layne Fritz came in for the final three outs. Rose had two doubles, an RBI and a run.

St. Lawrence 4, Plattsburgh 9
The hosts got on the scoreboard first in game two as well. In the top of the third Rose reached on a fielder's choice, and Caporale hit a single to put two on. Ferguson doubled to left center to score them both. In the bottom of the inning Plattsburgh tied the game, but Fritz got out of the jam leaving two stranded.

Plattsburgh used a two-out rally to score five in the fourth and scored on a while pitch in the fifth. Caporale hit her third hit of the game, and center fielder Tori Rotundo doubled to put two on in scoring position. First-year Lauren Jesmain singled to score them both. The Cardinals scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-4. Caporale had a two-out single in the seventh to go 4-4, but a line out ended the game.

Fritz struck out one in three and two thirds innings. Jacee Casebolt relieved her in the fourth to get the final out. Caporale gave up just one hit in the final two innings.

"Today was a good mix of clutch hits, defensive plays, and pitching, while also learning what areas we can learn from and improve on in order to be prepared for our conference opponents," said head coach Rosie Phillips. "I'm confident we will head into this weekend ready to compete in league play."

The Saints fall to 3-13 on the season and open up league play on Saturday when they host Clarkson. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. The Cardinals improved to 13-3 and are 4-0 in early SUNYAC play.
