Senior attack
Charlotte Powell poured in a team-best five goals, while
Liz Evans had five points on two goals and three assists as the No. 15 St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team used a five-goal run to pull away and take a 14-10 win over No. 23 SUNY Geneseo in their season opener on Wednesday afternoon at North Country Field.
The Scarlet and Brown improved to 1-0 on the year, while the Knights fell to 1-1.
The Saints were the first on the scoreboard in the game as
Ellie Camp and
Rachel Burke took feeds from
Jacqui Cloutier and
Liz Evans respectively and buried their chances to take the early lead.
Geneseo would battle back with a three-goal run fueled by two goals from Alaina Reina and one from Molly Brown to claim their first lead of the contest. With one second left in the first quarter, Powell was given a free-position attempt which she fired into the net to knot the game at 3-3.
Evans and Powell would score early in the second quarter for St. Lawrence, but four goals from the Knights put the Saints behind 7-5 with less than six minutes to go in the first half.
Kate Wilson would assist on Evans goal for the first assist of her career. The Scarlet and Brown attack would get one more goal from
Morgan Arakelian with 1:07 left in the first half that would end up starting a big Saints' run.
St. Lawrence's 7-6 deficit would balloon into a three-goal lead less than ten minutes into the second half. Powell would score the opening goal of the quarter to tie the game at 7-7. Evans would give the Saints the lead off a pass from
Jacqui Cloutier to take the lead before Powell would score another key goal. Cloutier scored the final goal of the run with 5:48 left in the third quarter.
The Knights would break up the run as Emily Salanger scored late in the third quarter for Geneseo.
St. Lawrence opened the fourth quarter much like they did the third, with another run as Powell,
Bella Hillman, and first-year
Caroline Hamilton each would score in the opening five minutes to take a five-goal lead at 13-8. The unassisted goal from Hamilton was the first in her career in Scarlet and Brown.
SUNY Geneseo would attempt to mount a comeback with goals from Salanger and Caitlyn Korzeniewski to make the score 13-10, but
Raelynn Bovenzi and the St. Lawrence defense would shut the door. Burke would close the game with 1:09 left with a goal off a great feed from Evans.
Bovenzi made five saves for the Scarlet and Brown in the win. Emily DeJohn made one save in the first half for the Knights, while teammate Maggie Rosaschi, who played in goal the second half for the Knights, saved four shots but earned the loss.
St. Lawrence outshot Geneseo 19-15, and held an edge in the ground ball game 22-16. Powell and the Saints were able to capitalize on two-man-up opportunities in the contest.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back at Hall-Leet Stadium this Sunday, March 12th, when the Saints play host to Stevens at 1:00 p.m.
