Johnson Doubles Twice Against Wesleyan

Sophomore Vivian Johnson went 3-4 with two doubles against Wesleyan University to lead the St. Lawrence University softball team on the third day of The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. The Saints lost to Wesleyan 6-5 and to Buffalo State in five innings.

Stella VanGee finished the day scoring three runs and recording two RBI off four hits.

St. Lawrence 2, Buffalo State 15 (5 inn.)
The Saints were the first one the board in the first game. VanGee singled up the middle and stole second. Johnson grounded out to advance the runner to third, and Cora Ferguson grounded out on a hard hit ball to first which scored VanGee. The Bengals strung together an eight-run third inning and scored fifteen unanswered runs to take the lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, first-years Lauren Jesmain and Emily Crain hit pinch hit singles in their first-collegiate at-bats. The Saints got one run back in the bottom of the fifth with VanGee hitting a lead-off double to right center. Meredith Rose singled and forced a run down which allowed VanGee time to cross the plate. The game was called after five innings.

In the second game of the day the Saints trailed by one through four innings. First-basemen Sofia Camillieri beat out a bunt to lead off the fifth inning, and Tori Rotundo slapped the ball to left field to put two on. VanGee brought them both home with a single. Johnson hit her second double of the afternoon to score VanGee. Rose put runners on the corner with a single to right field, and took second base. Ferguson walked to load the bases. Catcher Margo Hopper hit a ball hard that the shortstop could not field cleanly to bring Johnson home. The Saints batted through the order when Jesmain stepped up to the plate and earned her first collegiate RBI with a sacrifice fly to left to score Rose.

The Cardinals batted through the order in the bottom of the fifth and scored all five runs back to retake the lead 6-5, and the Scarlet and Brown were unable to get anyone further than second-base in their final two offensive innings.

The Saints fall to 0-6, while Buffalo State is 1-2 and Wesleyan is 7-4 on the year. The Saints return to Legends Field on March 21st to face Tufts at 11:30 a.m. followed by Gustavus Adolphus.
