Game Recap: Softball |

Saints Record 16 Hits on Second Day of Florida Trip

Stella VanGee recorded four hits to lead the Saints offense, and Sofia Berryhill struck out five in six and two third innings as the St. Lawrence University softball team lost a pair of one-run games to Old Westbury and Grinnell on Sunday afternoon in Clermont, Florida.

Vivian Johnson hit a triple, while VanGee, Sofia Camillieri, and Emily Harvey hit two-baggers. In addition to VanGee, Harvey and Meredith Rose had multiple-hit games.

Old Westbury 7, St. Lawrence 6 (8 inn.)
In the first game the Saints scored in each of the first four innings.

In the top of the first, VanGee reached on a fielder's choice and Rose singled to right field. Cora Ferguson and Olivia Caporale earned walks to bring VanGee across.

In the second Johnson tripled to the right corner, and VanGee's double brought her home. Ferguson walked again in the third, and first-year Emily Siansky hit a sacrifice bunt to score the left fielder.
Tori Rotundo reached in the fourth, beating out an infield single and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Johnson reached on an error to put runners on the corner, and Rose hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring her home.

Any time the Saints scored, the Panthers responded, and in the top of the sixth the Scarlet and Brown trailed by one. Vangee hit a one-out single and stole second base. Catcher Margo Hopper singled through the left side to score the second basemen and tie the game.

The game went to extras, which put Harvey on second to start the eighth inning. Back-to-back wild pitches brought the senior all the way around to take the lead. Old Westbury used heads up base-running to score two off an infield single and walk off the game.

St. Lawrence 2, Grinnell 3
The second game of the day featured a pitcher's duel between Berryhill and Grinnell's Kathryn Vermeulen. Berryhill gave up just one hit through the first six innings, but three scored in the top of the seventh. Layne Fritz relieved the sophomore and earned a backwards-k to close the inning.

Sofia Camillieri led off the inning with a hard-hit ball up the third base line for a double. Harvey made it two-on, pinch-hitting and reaching on an error. Zola Braswell hit one to the gap in right center which scored Camillieri and moved Harvey to third. Rotundo slapped one back to the pitcher, which brought Harvey home and Braswell, the tying run, to scoring position with one out and the top of the order, but Vermeulen was able to close the game from the circle.

The Saints fall to 0-4, while Old Westbury is 1-1 and Grinnell is 4-2 on the year. The Saints return to Legends Field on March 8th to face Buffalo State at 9 a.m. followed by Wesleyan.
