Saints Drop Pair on Opening Day in Florida

Meredith Rose hit a two-run home run and Sofia Berryhill struck out seven as the St. Lawrence University softball team opened their season at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. The Saints lost their first game to The College of Wooster 3-2, and to Luther 9-1.

In game one of the doubleheader the Saints and the Fighting Scots saw three and a half scoreless innings when Cora Ferguson hit a two-out single to right field. Rose then hit a line-drive over the left field fence to give the Scarlet and Brown a two-run lead.

Wooster's first three batters reached base on bunts in the top of the seventh, and all three would score to jump ahead 3-2, and the Saints were unable to score in the bottom of the inning.

Luther 9, St. Lawrence 1 (five innings)
In the second game of the day, a first inning home run put the Saints down early. In the top of the third Vivian Johnson reached on a fielder's choice and scored when Ferguson doubled to right center. Luther was quick to respond with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

First-year Olivia Caporale hit a hard ball up the first base line to get her first collegiate hit in the top of the fourth, but the Norse came up with a double-play to prevent any rally. In the bottom of the fifth they scored five more and the game ended 9-1.

"We had a lot of learning moments that made us better today," said head coach Rosie Phillips. "We faced two solid teams and made some really good contact, we just weren't able to string together timely and consistent hits to keep us ahead. We're looking forward to bringing what we learned today into our games tomorrow with confidence and intention."
