Six different players scored for the Saints, 10 players earned assists, and
Emil Zetterquist earned his second shutout of the year as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team ran away with a 6-0 win over Brown on Friday night in Providence, R.I.
The Scarlet and Brown improved to 14-13-0 with the win and 9-6-0 in ECAC play, while the Bears fell to 8-12-2, and 4-9-2 in league play.
"I thought we got better as the game went on," said Charles W. Appleton II head coach
Brent Brekke "Our special teams were very good tonight and made a major difference in the game. Brown is a hard working team and make you earn everything and pinned us down in the second period a few times. But I liked the way we responded in the third while playing with the lead. We managed the puck better and didn't give much up to lose momentum."
The Skating Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 5:15 into the contest.
Max Dorrington won an offensive zone faceoff that made its way back to
Luc Salem at the blueline. Salem fired a puck on net that was stopped then touched towards an unoccupied net by senior captain
Aleksi Peltonen. With the puck on the doorstep,
Jan Lasak came in and swept the puck into the net to put the Saints up 1-0.
After killing off a Brown power play, the Scarlet and Brown got back to work offensively scoring again with 8:20 left in the first. Senior captain
Jordan Steinmetz carried the puck from the right side of Jacob Zacharewicz and went all the way around the net before putting a shot on goal. The rebound went off the pad of the goaltender and onto the stick of Salem, who fired a five-hole shot through traffic and in for the 2-0 lead.
The goal was reviewed for goaltender interference but would ultimately stand.
Late in the period, St. Lawrence was afforded a power play and would get their third of the frame.
Philippe Chapleau collected a TomášÂ Mazura pass from the side wall to the blueline before skipping a pass to
Ty Naaykens. Naaykens ripped a shot-pass to the far post where Dorrington was there to tip the puck home for the 3-0 lead.
The power play goal gave the Saints their second straight three-goal first period after scoring three in the opening 20 at Cheel Arena last Saturday.
After the track meet opening period, the second became a slog that was bogged down by special teams play. Brown was afforded two power plays in the period, while the Saints had just one, which was cut short. Both teams would fail to capitalize.
Emil Zetterquist came up huge in the period stopping two breakaways and a pair of dangerous 1-on-1 rushes from the Bears' offense. Â
St. Lawrence scored their second power play goal of the game at 15:31 of the third period to go up 4-0. Dorrington started the play dropping a pass off to Mazura, who again made a play to Chapleau. The sophomore fed Naaykens, who this time blasted home a one-timer for his first goal of the year to increase the lead.
The offense continued to pour goals in as minutes later a beautiful Saints' passing play made it a 5-0 game.
Tucker McIntosh, who was up on the rush, made a pass back to
Drake Burgin, who dropped the puck off to Mazura. Burgin circled back behind the Brown defense and collected a pass back from Mazura in the slot. The sophomore blueliner laced a shot off the crossbar and in to finish the beautiful play.
Peltonen, who was playing in his 100th career game in Scarlet and Brown, scored the final goal of the contest for St. Lawrence. Dorrington, who was making great plays all night, finally earned an assist on the play as he passed the puck to
Mason Waite on the blueline, who fed a shot on net. The rebound dribbled out to the weak side where Peltonen spun and buried the puck for the 6-0 lead.
Salem, Peltonen, Dorrington, and Naaykens all tallied a goal and an assist, while Chapleau and Mazura each earned two helpers a piece.
Zetterquist, who earned his first career shutout against Brown in December, earned his second tonight stopping all 21 shots he faced. Zacharewicz, who was starting his first career game, made 20 saves.
St. Lawrence went 2-for-4 on the power play, while Brown went 0-for-5 on the man-advantage. The Saints also held a 26-21 edge in shots on goal.
The Skating Saints will be back in action tomorrow when the team heads to New Haven, Conn. For a matchup against Yale at Ingalls Rink.
