Aly McLeod,
Kennedy Wilson and
Taylor Lum scored to lead the No. 6 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team, but the Scarlet and Brown fell to fifth-ranked Clarkson, 6-3, in a non-conference Route 11 Rivalry matchup in front of 3,223 fans for a 'School Day' game on Wednesday morning.
Clarkson got on the board first, as Dominique Petrie cashed in on a scramble in front of Saints' goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström at 10:10 of the first period.
In similar fashion, the Scarlet and Brown tied the game up as
Aly McLeod snuck one past Michelle Pasiechnyk at 13:40.
Katina Duscio and
Hillary Sterling assisted on the play.
The Golden Knights took the lead, as Nicole Gosling ripped a shot from the slot to give Clarkson a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
After the first period shots were evenly matched at 8-8.
Early in the second period, the Golden Knights scored their third of the game, but the play was challenged and the goal was overturned for goaltender interference.
After the overturned tally on Clarkson, the second period remained scoreless, with both Nordström and Pasiechnyk denying chances for either side and at the end of two periods, St. Lawrence held a 20-16 edge in shots.
The Saints rally continued, as
Kennedy Wilson found another equalizer for the Scarlet and Brown, beating Pasiechnyk with a tip off an original shot from
Melissa Jefferies, knotting the game 2-2.
Just about three minutes later, Sena Catterall scored one a short-handed rush to give the Golden Knights a 3-2 advantage.
Brooke McQuigge then put Clarkson up by two goals, as she capitalized on a door-step rebound opportunity.
Taylor Lum looked to keep the Saints in it once more with her third of the season and the Saints 13th powerplay goal of the season. Graduate defender
Mae Batherson took an original shot in the point, which was poked by
Abby Hustler and cashed in by Lum to bring the game back within one.
St. Lawrence's 13 powerplay goals ranks third nationally.
Darcie Lappan and Petrie tacked on two more goals, making the final score 6-3 in favor of the Golden Knights.
"Clarkson put on a great event for the North Country fans today having all the schools attend our game," said head coach
Chris Wells. "The players on both teams provided great entertainment for everyone in attendance."
Â
"We played a solid game and had plenty of chances to come out on top," Wells added. "Clarkson did a nice job capitalizing at key points in the game keeping us chasing the score all game. Our effort was there from the puck drop! That was great to see."
Nordström finished with 27 saves in the loss, while Pasiechnyk made 29. Clarkson finished with a 33-32 edge in shots.
With the loss, the Saints fell to 10-2-0 on the season, while Clarkson improved to 12-0-1. This week's matchups between the two teams are both non-conference contests.
The Golden Knights will make the trip down Route 11 to Appleton for a rematch and 2 p.m. puck drop on Saturday, November 11.
