Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Lucas Podvey '24

No. 5 Clarkson Hands No. 6 Saints First Home Loss

Sophomore goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström had 39 saves, as the sixth-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team fell to the fifth-ranked Clarkson Golden Knights 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in Canton, New York.

The Golden Knights had a fast start and Nordström was tested early. Just 40 seconds into the game, the sophomore made three point-blank saves on a Clarkson forward open in the slot. While Nordström was sharp early, Clarkson was able to beat her twice in the first period.

Five minutes into the first period, Clarkson's Dominique Petrie sent a cross-ice pass through multiple St. Lawrence defenders to a cutting Darcie Lappan. She then tapped Petrie's pass under Nordström's pad to grab the game's first goal.

The Golden Knights stuck again six minutes later on the power-play. Lappan sent a shot from the point that was tipped by Sena Catteral past Nordström.

Clarkson outshot SLU 14-8 and led 2-0 after one period of play.

The second period saw Clarkson continue their strong forecheck to generate opportunities, and they piled on 23 shots in the period. Nordström held strong to keep the game at 2-0, which enabled the Saints to generate some offensive momentum.

Sophomore forward Kiley Mastel had a partial breakaway in the middle of the period, but she was denied by Clarkson goaltender Michelle Pasiechnyk.

Clarkson held its 2-0 lead after two periods.

The Saints carried their better play in the second period into the third. They had multiple power-play opportunities late in the game and pinned the Golden Knights in their zone. The Saints outshot Clarkson 12-5 in the period; however, St. Lawrence was unable to solve Pasiechnyk.

The Golden Knights would add an empty netter to seal their 3-0 victory over their North Country Rivals.

"Even though we didn't score in the third period we almost did enough to steal one this afternoon," said head coach Chris Wells. "Clarkson was on their game hard for the first two periods and we didn't have much of an answer until the third."

The Golden Knights outshot SLU 42-30 in shots-on-goal, and 65-49 in attempts.

Pasiechnyk had 30 save shutout in the win, while Nordström finished with 39 saves.

Clarkson capitalized on their power-play opportunities, finishing 2-4. St. Lawrence went 0-4 on their player-advantage opportunities.

"I am glad we were able to get back to our game and create the chances we did," Wells added. "Two very good teams played two solid games this week and the fans were certainly entertained with both performances. We will use the last part of the game to prepare us for league play next weekend vs Yale and Brown."

St. Lawrence fell to 10-3-0 with the loss, while Clarkson improved to 13-0-1 with the win.
The Scarlet and Brown return to Appleton next weekend for their last home games of the fall semester. They face Yale on Friday at 6:00 p.m., and then Brown on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
