Emma-Sofie Nordström recorded her first-career shutout and
Julia Gosling scored two goals to power the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 2-0 win over 15th-ranked Providence on Saturday afternoon to complete the weekend sweep of the Friars.
With today's win, the Saints are off to a 4-0-0 start to the season, which is tied with the 1999-00 season for the best start in program history. The Saints have also netted 18 goals through three games and 20 goals through four games, which had previously never happened in the teams' Division I history.
Gosling, who scored her fourth goal in as many games, took two strides from the right circle and sent a wrister past Friar's goaltender Mireille Kingsley for the powerplay tally and the 1-0 lead at 6:24 of the first period.
At the end of the first period, the Saints held a slight 8-7 lead in shots.
No goals were scored in the second frame, as Nordström and Kingsley kept both teams off the scoresheet and after 40 minutes of play, Providence led 24-15 in shots.
The majority of the third also remained scoreless, but the Saints second goal also came off the stick of Gosling, as she blocked a Friar shot, corralled the puck and beat two defenders for the empty-net score.
"Providence came out with more jump and intensity than we did today," said head coach
Chris Wells. "We executed on an early power play to give ourselves the lead and Emma had a solid second period to keep it 1-0 and made two great stops late to secure the win."
Nordström made all 27 saves to preserve her first career shutout for the Scarlet and Brown, while Kingsley finished with 20 saves for the Friars.
Providence finished with a 27-22 edge in shots.
"This was a nice stretch of games for our team early this season having a six-game home stand," Wells added. "We have learned a lot early and we will look forward to jumping on the bus next week to play Vermont."
St. Lawrence improved to 4-0-0, while Providence fell to 0-2-0.
The Saints will play their first road game of the season when they travel to UVM on Friday, October 13 for a 5 p.m. puck drop.
