Julia Gosling and
Aly McLeod scored, but the No. 11 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team fell to 12th ranked Vermont in their first road game of the season on Friday evening in Burlington, Vt.
Â
With the loss, the Saints fell to 4-1-0 on the season, while the Catamounts moved to 1-1-1.
Â
Just under four minutes into the first period, Alaina Tanski gathered clearance off the glass from Krita Parkkonen. Tanski entered the Saints' defensive zone 1-on-1, but had a trailer in Lily Humphrey. Tanski carried the puck cross-ice and left a drop pass for Humphrey, who beat Saints' goaltender
Emma-Sofie Nordström low-glove side to put UVM up 1-0.
Â
Natalie Mylnkova fed it to Maddy Skelton, who skated past two Saints and with a Saints defender on her back, Skelton went backhand, forehand and beat Nordström over her glove and under the bar.
Â
Skelton's goal was the second for the Catamounts, who scored two goals in just 38 seconds and took a 2-0 lead after the first period of play.
Â
Just 52 seconds into the middle frame, junior forward
Taylor Lum carried the puck up ice and fed Gosling, who was parked on the hashmark. Gosling's quick release beat Catamounts goaltender Jess McPherson five-hole.
Â
Not even two minutes later, UVM responded. The Catamounts capitalized on a Saints turnover and had a 3-on-1 rush. Bella Parento's cross-ice pass deflected off a defender and Lara Beecher corralled the loose puck and beat a sliding Nordström.
Â
Beecher added her second of the game at 7:17 to increase Vermont's lead to 4-1. With the Catamounts fourth goal, head coach
Chris Wells pulled Nordström and sent
Kassidy Lawrence into goal for her first appearance in Scarlet and Brown.
Â
UVM extended their lead to four on the powerplay. From the blueline, Mlynkova passed to Evelyne Blais-Savoie on the faceoff dot, whose quick slap shot beat Lawrence.
Â
Just about a minute later, junior forward
Sarah Marchand's strong forecheck left a loose puck that first-year forward
Abby Hehl tracked down. Hehl made a nice cross-ice pass to McLeod. She sent Hehl's pass past a sliding McPherson.
Â
Mlynkova added another point to the scoresheet, with a goal at 4:17 of the third period for the 6-2 final.
Â
Wells pulled Lawrence at 6:33 of the third for the extra attacker, but the Saints were unable to force a comeback over Vermont.
Â
"Vermont was able to get out early on us with some nice transition goals," said Wells. They used their skills early to keep us from our game. It was one of those games after the first where we had great possession and chances for the remainder of the game. It seemed like each time we weren't able to execute, Vermont was able to capitalize and score."
Â
Nordström finished with seven saves, while Lawrence made two. UVM's McPherson finished with 32 stops for the Catamounts.
Â
St. Lawrence outshot Vermont 34-15.
Â
"We gave it a great effort to get back in it," Wells added. "But Vermont and McPherson blocked shots and made some great saves."
Â
The Catamounts will make the trip to Appleton Arena, as the two teams will meet again tomorrow in Canton. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m.
