A hard-fought five-set thriller brought the St. Lawrence University volleyball team close to a victory, but Vassar held them off in the final set to take a 3-2 victory over the Saints.
The loss brings the Saints' record to 1-7 in conference play.
"We definitely played the whole spectrum today," said
Shelly Roiger, the Saints head coach. "I thought there were points that were some of our best of the season and at times we could not have looked worse. It's hard to win a match with the number of receiving errors we had.Â
"On a positive note, it was good to see multiple hitters being efficient with their opportunities. That needs to become the norm instead of a talking point after the match."
The efficiency of the hitters mentioned by Roiger was seen all the way down the stat sheet for St. Lawrence. Â
Araiza Acum-Santos led the way with 19 kills and
Vivian Zymeck had 14, and Adeline Reisenberger also registered five of her own.
Kate Gardner and
Rachel Boudreau also had four kills each in the contest.
The Saints began the game by going down 1-0 after conceding the first set 25-21. They then rebounded to tie it up at 1-1 by winning the second set 25-21, taking the lead in the second half and not looking back.
The Saints then were beaten 25-8 in the third set to be put on the brink, but they rebounded for a tight win in the fourth set 25-23, which came off the back of six straight aces from libero
Kori Meissner on the service line.
In the fifth and final set, Vassar took an early 5-1 lead and never looked back, ultimately outscoring St. Lawrence 15-9 for the win.
The Saints' season will wrap up this week, but not before they get a full slate of non-conference matchups in. They head to SUNY Plattsburgh to face off against the Cardinals, before returning home for their final two home matches on the weekend against SUNY Cortland and SUNY Potsdam at Burkman Gymnasium.
